All good roots reggae and dub tracks have two basic ingredients: heavy bass lines and solid drumming. That's what anchors the music, that's the tunes' foundations. And that's two of the reasons
why this Ashley album works: loud and clear bass, and steady drum beats throughout.



But that's not all we get. Also present are melodious digital horns, the melodica, an mbira, the sitar, long atmospheric synth chords, and a siren which takes us into the roots dance hall. This
is UK dub with a small twist. It is based on 70s and early 80s Jamaican dub music, but there's several other things here which give this set a peculiar feel.

Osbourne Ruddock, alias King Tubby, est un ingénieur du son et producteur jamaïcain originaire de Kingston. Né le 28 janvier 1941 il est assassiné le 6 février 1989 par un tueur anonyme, dont
l'unique motivation semblait se limiter au vol de son argent, de son revolver et de sa chaîne en or, dans son studio à Kingston.



On dit souvent que Tubby est à l'origine du Dub, car c'est lui le premier à avoir compris le potentiel du jeu avec les différentes pistes d'un enregistrement. Il est à l'origine de la plupart des
techniques de production du dub que sont les effets qui caractérisent le style. On peut ainsi dire qu'il est l'inventeur du remix, avec cette manière de re-travailler la matière brute, de la
re-composer, ce qui a ouvert la voie à une multitude de genre de musique électronique.

    Originally released in 2002 on cult Swedish trance label Spiral Trax, Stress Assassin’s Within the Office of Eye and Ear album swiftly found its way into the boxes of chillout
and dub DJs worldwide. Unfortunately Spiral Trax went out of business in the mid noughties and their back catalogue became unobtainable.



    As part of Dubmission’s 15th birthday celebrations, we are re-releasing classic albums such as this, making them available digitally for the first time and allowing them to
reach new audiences as well as satisfying old fans.

Artist Profile



    Stress Assassin is the chilled electronic dub project of Henrik Jonsson. Henrik has a broad artistic background, studying in an art academy for three years, playing in various
bands and simultaneously participated in many exhibitions. Additionally, he has performed on open stages for expressionistic art, combining music and visual arts with parties. He also happens to
be a dedicated graffiti painter in his spare time.



    During his three years at the art academy, he received a scholarship, which meant he could buy his first sampler. At the age of thirteen, while having his very first spliff, he
was introduced to Jamaican dub. Ever since, he has been devoted to old tape delays and is a major collector of 70's dub records. We can hear that this has played a huge impact on his music
making, as well as being influenced by old school Hip Hop and artists like Brian Eno, The Who and Tangerine Dream.



    Henrik is also the right hand of Atmos when he is performing live around the world, and together they are 'Echölab', a project that merges the trancey sounds of Atmos with the
dubby sounds of Stress Assassin.

Le londonien Mikuś est de retour dans nos chaînes hi-fi avec deux nouveaux EPs sortis simultanément sur Terra Incognita et Planet Terror.



Il y a quelques mois, Mikuś nous avait littéralement vampirisé avec trois somptueux EPs : Dub Mirror, Rain Down Dub et Dub Praises, sortis sur le netlabel Planet Terror. Aujourd'hui l'artiste
londonien revient nous assener une énorme claque musicale avec deux maxis qui explorent le dub bien au delà de ses frontières et qui attestent à nouveau de l'étendue du talent du
compositeur/dub-maker.



Brass Islands Of Dub est le premier opus de Mikuś sur Terra Incognita, label récemment monté par le musicien et son ami SixtySixNorth (dont on vous recommande l'EP Convergence Vol.1). Après un
essai très réussi sur le morceau Dub Mirror, Mikuś s'associe à nouveau avec le trompettiste de jazz Kevin Robinson. Les deux artistes partent à la conquête de nouveaux territoires sonores,
puisant leur inspiration au cœur des racines historiques, géographiques et culturelles des musiques qu'ils affectionnent.



On se retrouve ainsi transporté plusieurs centaines d'années en arrière, à l'époque des grandes explorations de la fin du XVème siècle, à bord des caravelles affrétées par Christophe Colomb pour
les Amériques (et notamment son 2nd voyage à la découverte des Caraïbes). Le titre Heavy Load illustre parfaitement la démesure logistique d'une pareille expédition avec une rythmique puissante
et une ligne de basse ravageuse. Kevin Robinson apporte un superbe contre-point mélodique à la trompette, évoquant la condition humaine des équipages à bord des navires surchargés de matériel,
armes et animaux.



Le second morceau marque une première étape dans l'exploration avec la découverte des côtes d'une île proche de Cuba : l'île de la jeunesse (Isla de la Juventud). Les deux musiciens
retranscrivent fidèlement les ambiances chaleureuses d'une terre encore vierge de l'emprise occidentale grâce à un dub-jazz agrémenté de musique traditionnelle cubaine et de sonorités
tribales.

On bascule à nouveau dans la réalité historique avec Way Things Used To Be, un morceau qui fait ressurgir dans nos mémoires les conséquences de la colonisation européenne sur les populations
indigènes. La rythmique est à nouveau pesante, comme pour évoquer des combats entres conquistadors espagnols et tribus Arawaks. La trompette mélancolique de Robinson résonne comme la complainte
des victimes de nombreux massacres durant cette période de l'histoire qui a aussi marqué le début de l'esclavage.



L'EP se clôt sur une note plus positive, on repart à la conquête d'une nouvelle île qui est devenue quelques siècles plus tard le berceau du reggae et du dub : la Jamaïque. La rythmique est
entraînante, soutenue par des skanks vaporeux et une ligne de basse enveloppante. L'aspect mélodique n'est heureusement pas en reste et la trompette aérienne de Robinson nous transporte des
plaines verdoyantes jusqu'aux hauteurs de l'île.



En l'espace de quatre morceaux, Mikuś et Kevin Robinson livrent une fusion inédite entre dub, jazz, musiques traditionnelle cubaine et sonorités tribales. Un pari audacieux qui se révèle très
réussi malgré la courte durée du maxi. En outre, les deux musiciens s'appuient sur un profond background musical, culturel et historique pour insuffler aux morceaux toute la densité qu'ils
méritent. Pour notre part, on est instantanément absorbé par cette musique tellement inspiratrice que lorsque l'on ressort de l'écoute, on se dit "encore !" et l'on repart pour une nouvelle
exploration de l'EP.

It starts with high, yelping vocals, a slow, solid beat from the barrel-like taiko drum, and the wail of the hichiriki flute used in Shinto religious ceremonies. Then comes the distinctive
rumbling bass that is the trademark of one of Britain's maverick veterans. Jah Wobble is off on his musical adventures once again. He may have started out as the backbone of the early Public
Image Ltd, but he has gone on to fuse dub with jazz-rock, English folk and (most recently) far eastern themes, with his bravely original Chinese Dub. Now he has moved on to reinterpret Japanese
styles, using very much the same technique, matching traditional acoustic instruments against his bass, beats keyboards and programming, and doing so with remarkable delicacy. Best of all is his
treatment of traditional pieces such as Kokiriko, in which the sturdy vocals from drummer Joji Hirota are matched against the zither-like koto or banjo-like shamisen, with Wobble's bass holding
the music together.

By 1975, the Jamaican dub had evolved from being a mere instrumental version of a singer's hit to a unique creative force. Instruments began dropping in and out of the mix unexpectedly, vocals appeared only to be frozen in time by heavy doses of echo and reverb, and filtered drums started changing shape before listeners' ears. The first shots had been fired two years earlier, with the near-simultaneous release of Lee "Scratch" Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub, Herman Chin Loy's Aquarius Dub, and Clive Chin's Java Java Dub opening the floodgates. Lost in the shuffle during the years that followed was this 1975 encounter between King Tubby and the Morwells. Formed in 1973 by Maurice Wellington and Eric Lamont, the duo soon began releasing music on their own MOR-WELL ESQ label. For Dub Me (1975), Tubby draws heavily upon the Morwells' debut album, Presenting the Morwells, on ten mixes. Blood & Fire adds four dub cuts, the finest of which is an extra version of the group's take on "Swing & Dine," with the engineer in top form. For the most part, the mixes are more reserved than usual, which is possibly the reason this disc was given a mixed reception upon reissue in 1997. As reggae fans know, however, the presence of the dub master alone makes this worthy of consideration, and there's much to enjoy here. Horn lines and guitar chords hang suspended, high above the drum and bass foundation on "Morpheus Special." Eric Clarke's drum patterns slip and slide across Errol Holt's bass on "Bald Head," and Tubby expertly teases listeners with enticing snippets of vocal on the infectious "Pegasus Rock." Dub Me probably won't leave newcomers in awe of Tubby's mixing prowess, nor of roots reggae's elemental power, but serious fans should definitely take note.
