When Arthur Conley asked the immortal question 'do you like good music, that sweet soul music', maybe he didn't exactly have the island of Jamaica in mind; nevertheless, the answer from that quarter was a loud and clear 'yes'. The cultural relationship between the USA and Jamaica had been in place long before, from jazz through r & b, and on into the age of soul. A whole generation of singers, players and mcs had grown up in thrall to the sounds of 1960s black America; indeed, in the 1950s Jamaican dancehall music itself had evolved by adapting shuffle-based r&b and boogie, with deejays like Count Machuki freely borrowing slang & lyrics from Harlem journalist Dan Burley's 'Jive' magazine, using that language to introduce and pep up their selections. The link continued through the early 1960s, with singers and vocal groups - Ken Boothe, Slim Smith & the Techniques, the Melodians, Roy Shirley - all engaging in impromptu cutting contests in ghetto locations like Back O Wall, in which the material they sang was drawn from the catalogues of such as the Drifters, Clyde McPhatter, and the ever-present Impressions. When 'soul' replaced 'r & b' in the affections of black American listeners, so rock steady and later, reggae, developed as Jamaican music kept pace with innovations on the US mainland. Through the 1960s, as US soul began increasingly to reflect the social concerns and political aspirations of the black working class, the same phenomenon began to register in Jamaican music. By the end of the 1960s, Jamaica could boast the presence of several singers who equalled in emotional intensity their US cousins, among them such as Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis, John Holt and Delroy Wilson, as well as groups like the Techniques with Slim Smith, Pat Kelly and others. Similarly, instrumentalists like the Meters, Booker T & the MGs and James Brown's band also had their influence on the development of reggae. This compilation celebrates that cultural exchange during the period 1973-1980, emphasising the fact that roots music doesn't have to be overtly Rasta inspired for the message to get across; indeed several of the songs here proved to be as suitable for Jamaican conditions as they were in the USA.

Dernier album en date du "mono loco" (le fou mignon) tout frais sortie des bacs ce mois-ci, cet album nous plonge au coeur d'un gros mélange électro reggae flamenquito. Un peu plus èfèmisé qu'auparavant, il séduira un plus grand nombre d'auditeurs. On regrettera peut être la fougue des premiers albums, mais bon que voulez vous on ne peux pas être génial a chaque fois, d'autant que le personnage vieillit héhé. Néanmoins, voila un album pure production catalane qui réjouira nos oreilles avides de soleil surtout en cette période automnale ou la bise fut venu bien plus vite qu'attendue !!

Ecouter The Heavy, c’est un peu dîner avec les Blues Brothers qui se seraient accouplés avec Al Green et auraient eu The Noisettes comme enfants.
Depuis quelques années, on voit les influences sixties envahir la nouvelle scène internationale. Or, peu de groupes sont assez audacieux pour mixer cet héritage avec une bonne dose de modernité 00’. C’est un pari réussi pour The Heavy qui nous avait déjà enthousiasmé avec Great vengeance and furious fire en 2007. Pas mal pour un groupe formé il y a quatre ans à Noid (bled au sud-est de l’Angleterre) par une poignée d’amis d’enfance. The Heavy nous offre aujourd’hui un deuxième album assez impressionnant pour être considéré comme l’un des projets à ne pas louper en cette rentrée 2009. The house that dirt built débute par une intro digne d’un film de Quentin Tarentino et se poursuit par Oh no ! Not you again !, morceau phare de l’album, aux rythmes très vintage. On s’attend presque à ce qu’ Uma Thurman reprenne son carré brun pour un remake de Pulp Fiction. Paradoxalement les aigus dans la voix du chanteur Swaby prennent presque des accents hard rock, ce qui ajoute un vrai caractère au titre. On retrouve aussi un véritable retour aux sources de l’instrumental puisque les cuivres, pourtant de plus en plus rares, ont une place de choix dans The house that dirt built, en particulier dans Sixteen où la voix de Swaby nous offre un groove sensuel relayé par des chœurs féminins. On comprend pourquoi des préservatifs sont distribués par Swaby lui même à la fin de ses concerts ! Après la grande claque de ces premiers titres, The Heavy calme le jeu sur Short Change Hero, où après une introduction très « western », la mélodie impose sa lenteur presque mélancolique. Damon Albarn aurait pu produire ce morceau et l’intégrer dans le projet Gorillaz sans qu’on en soit étonnés. Puisqu’on parle de la production, notons qu’elle est assurée ici par Jim Abiss qui a également travaillé avec Kasabian et Arctic Monkeys. Abiss a su alterner son poisseux, guitare enrouées et soul exacerbée. On oublie la soupe pop qui envahit les ondes et on se laisse porter. Seul bémol de ce projet assez exceptionnel : des rythmes un peu plus communs vers la fin de l’album. On citera par exemple Stuck qui clôture l’album par une mélodie plus comparable à une ballade qu’à un bon vieux rock des familles. Malgré la mention toute particulière aux brillants Cause for Alarm qui nous étonne par ses inclusions ska et Love like that dont Al Green n’aurait pas renié le son stéréo. On a donc entre les mains un projet inclassable car à la fois rock, soul, pop et funk. Cosmopolite à l’image des membres du groupe qui viennent eux-mêmes de divers horizons. The house that dirt built album de cette rentrée ? Sans conteste. Le combo anglais ne pourra laisser personne indifférent cette année et c’est tant mieux.

Before Audioclocker’s album and mr.teddybear‘s album, foresee in october and december 2009, dezordr records continue his rise with the publication of session 003; third volume of sessions compilations (free download available in “goodies” section on the website). At the borderline of musical frontier; Dezordr show an eclectic identity devote to satisfy curious music lover who want to discover unassuming talents. The soul of 003 stay , once again, on universe near abstract hip hop, original score, rock, electro… Many influences who be mixed to give finally a big musical sideboard make up of 18 tracks. Like other sessions, the third bring together artists who comes from all around the world like Leaf (USA), Idepthz (Poland), Commodo (Spain), Cyesm (France), L'oniraunote (France) and many others… The tradition want that we can find a part of the former members with Dtracks & Shiyugosha in duet, mr.teddybear, Steckri, Weedafresh and Audioclockers.
