Really wonderful stuff -- a collection of totally unique grooves that won't cross over with any of your other African funk compilations! The focus here is on jazz, not funk or soul -- and the set features a wealth of great tracks pulled from obscure South African records of the late 70s and early 80s. Funky fusion is definitely in command here -- and the overall feel of the tracks is similar to some of the best European funky fusion of the 70s, fused with elements of African percussion and instrumentation -- creating a true crossover of styles that crackles with a freshness that will have you coming back to this one again and again! Most tracks are instrumental -- and the grooves here are a lot more complicated than on your average James Brown-inspired African funk tracks, a mix of strident modal modes, and other choppier funkier riff-heavy tunes. Plus, the whole thing's put together with the righteous intelligence of all the other Counterpoint titles -- with great notes, incredible sound, and an approach that will easily take you to a whole new musical world! Après pratiquement 6 ans d’absence discographique voilà donc Tino Gonzales de retour. Toujours aussi énergique, funky ou soul, avec orgue et cuivres, selon l’humeur. Los Reyes Del K.O, on connaît moins ou pas du tout. Il s’agit d’un duo espagnol composé de Marcos Coll (harmonica) et Adrian Costa (guitare et chant). Brillants duettistes, très dynamiques, les deux acolytes anglophones dispensent un Chicago blues débridé de belle qualité. On penserait à première vue qu’il s’agit d’un enregistrement conjoint de Tino Gonzales et de Los Reyes Del K.O, et bien non. Voilà la réalisation étonnante d’un projet artistique de musiciens qui veulent faire un disque ensemble mais qui présentent à tour de rôle leurs propres productions. A part égale le disque affiche donc 5 titres signés Gonzales et 5 titres du duo Ibérique. Si les styles sont différents, l’ensemble est varié mais pas incohérent. Enregistrées en Allemagne où le Latino de Chicago a rencontré Coll et Costa, les sessions sont faites avec des musiciens locaux. C’est ça l’Internationale du blues !

Speedometer get better and better with each new record - and this time around, they've risen to the upper level of grooving in the deep funk underground - sitting nicely next to the best from the Daptone, Soul Fire, and Tru Thoughts camp with an approach that's heavy on the drums, filled with funky guitars, and topped with plenty of horns! Vocals are great too - thanks to guest appearances from Ria Currie and Miami soul legend Robert Moore - both of whom really flesh out the tunes wonderfully with their soulful styles. Core instrumentation is as tight as it can be, and it looks like the move to the Freestyle label has really been a great one for the group.

Benedic Lamdin est un type qui n’aime pas s’ennuyer. Pourtant bien occupé avec sa double casquette de musicien-producteur (Nostalgia 77) et patron de son propre label (Impossible Ark Records), le désoeuvrement prend chez lui des formes particulières aux conséquences inattendues.

Avec Skeletons, on se dit que Lamdin a trouvé de quoi combler ses rares périodes d’inactivité en peuplant son salon. Plus qu’un groupe, Skeletons est avant tout un projet dans lequel les protagonistes ne se sont pas rencontrés au sens physique du terme. Chacun des musiciens a été enregistré séparément, en l’absence des autres, un casque sur les oreilles et le travail des précédents en toile de fond. Leur seul point commun fut d’habiter temporairement le salon de leur hôte, transformé en studio d’enregistrement improvisé. Après le home studio, le home band ; plus fort que le jeu Guitar hero. Et on imagine assez bien le deal : OK Alice, tu peux dormir chez moi, mais tu me fais un petit quelque chose sur "Adam and Eve"…. Benedic a ensuite assemblé les bandes enregistrées pendant trois ans et donné naissance au plus étonnant groupe de jazz qui soit. Cuivré et groovy, Skeletons – le groupe – fusionne les chorus de sax à la Stan Getz, les ambiances éthiopiennes décidément très en vogue et l’afro funk, à la fois proche du Quantic Soul Orchestra et du Heliocentrics.

Holy cow! This is the monster lost funk album that features Willis Jackson, George Benson, and Dave Baby Cortez on a bunch of tripped out blunted breakin' cuts! Worth it for the price of "Smokin' Cheeba-Cheeba" alone, but also has the great breakbeat version of "Ain't No Sunshine" with a tenor solo by Willis Jackson, and the slow bluesy talking cut "Fed Up", a baaaad rap about a couple splitting up. Very dope. Plus, we've also even heard that George Benson was never even on the record, although he's listed on the cover. Even more mystery, but still great grooves, whoever the guitar player is!
