“As a daily routine Monsieur Dubois, a retired ornithologist, would live his life looking up to the sky in search of something special. After doing so for years, his uneventful life brutally
ended, when one day Dubois spotted six as of yet undiscovered species of all sorts. They were flying together most elegantly and did so in one tight formation! Overwhelmed by emotions, the
fanatic birdwatcher produced a heartfelt primordial shout and instantly got into a state of shock, having just encountered such tremendous beauty. Breathing out his very last breath, the old man
gave this particular group his name and died happily ever after…“
Starting out as a jamband back in 1999, Monsieur Dubois has developed into a tight unit performing a crossover best described as “Danceable Hardjazz”. Monsieur Dubois adds a particular twist to
anything that grooves, with a sound defined by obstinate beats, furious solos, spacy Rhodes and pumping bass. A sound that easily finds its way to the public and has made Monsieur Dubois perform
all over Europe over the past decade.
Monsieur Dubois newest album just got released and is called “Slow Bombastik”. Imagine being dragged from a dark sweaty discotheque to a crowded marketplace in Lagos, or suddenly finding yourself
on the desolate Russian plains just after you watched a Blaxploitation movie in the centre of Amsterdam. Slow Bombastik feels just like this.
After the debut “Ruff” and successor “Soul Integration”, the Dutch band strikes again with a versatile album that sounds to the point and isn’t afraid of the simple or the empty. Monsieur Dubois
has put a bag of fresh influences into the new sound, but hasn’t forgotten to feature its mean trademark: getting steamed up with stubborn grooves and furious solos…
On the first two albums “Ruff” and “Soul Integration”, Monsieur Dubois already showed a raw yet sophisticated character, featuring original grooves, tasty improvisation and tight interplay. After
release these albums stayed in the jazz charts for many months, followed by an Edison nomination and the proclamation “Best Dutch jazz album of the decade”. The albums also received great
response from the international press: “Furious debut” (Jazz Thing), “Brilliantly leaves behind many current hypes” (De Morgen), “Ready to conquer the rest of Europe” (JAZZISM).

The original Incredible Bongo Band’s “Bongo Rock” is firmly cemented into musical history having provided the oft sampled (and completely irresistible) “Apache” drum break for a million and one
producers to cut up. Also known as
Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band, the project was born in 1972. Viner, a record artist manager and executive at MGM Records, was making use of MGM recording facilities in down-time,
recruiting whichever studio musicians
were on-hand. Ringo Starr is rumored to have played on some tracks. They made two albums of funky, instrumental music filled with covers of popular songs of the day and heavily relying on bongo
drums, conga drums, rock drums and brass.
Over 3 decades after its inception UK producer, and avid record collector, Shawn Lee was marveling at the fact that there had never been an Indian style, sitar and tabla-heavy, version of the
Incredible Bongo Band masterpiece “Apache.” “Such an obvious track, I still find it hard to believe that one doesn't already exist. (It is hella’ obscure if it does…) “Apache” is one of the
greatest and most famous drum-breaks of all time,” says Lee. Not content with covering just “Apache,” Lee decided he’d take on the entire Bongo Band debut album; and also two of his favorite
tracks from their second album for good measure. “Why cover a song when you can cover a whole album? This is the road to madness my friend, and it is my preferred route!” he adds.
Lee has attempted to replay, recreate, and capture all of the sonic characteristics of the original recordings. Viner left Lee with simple tunes to cover, but the Bongo Band used sophisticated
arrangements and his all-star line-up of guests played killer performances throughout the album. Lee couldn’t find any Beatles to recruit and record, instead he called on the talents of tabla
player Prithpal Rajput aka Cyber of the Asian Dub Foundation, and Style Council keyboard-man Mick Talbot to help realize his eccentric vision. With the utmost respect in mind Lee has re-thought
Viners drum-driven masterpiece, presenting it in an Indian-funk style that could easily be confused with the vintage release Lee was bemused to never have previously found. Lee had such a blast
covering all the songs he’s thinking about other favorite albums to tackle, tabla style.

‘Last Days of Meaning’ is Sawhney¹s ninth studio album. Played by the legendary actor John Hurt, the album¹s main character - Donald Meaning - is an embittered old man, fearful of
immigrants, terrorists and the outside world. He sits in a room raging against childhood memories, society, himself and a small tape recorder sent to him by his ex-wife. The
cassette-recorder contains the songs of the album - A message of reflection, shared memory, empathy and ultimately hope. Featuring an array of brilliant performances by singers and musicians
alike, the new album is a response to the fear, dogmatism and entrenchment that we sometimes acquire with age.
The new album will be launched at The Royal Albert Hall and is to include a new work to be performed on the Hall’s grand 140 year old organ. A small section of Sawhney’s pipe organ creation
will form part of his brand new album ‘Last Days of Meaning’. On 6 May 2011, Sawhney will be joined on stage by a string quintet and key members of his band including Martyn Kaine on drums, Aref
Durvesh on Tabla and Dholak, Ashwin Srinivasan on flute and vocals, Ian Burdge on cello, Tina Grace, Nicki Wells and Rahel
The show will also feature special guest Natty.
At the concert, Sawhney will perform tracks from the new album, along with a retrospective of his studio work to date. The included 15 minute organ commission will be performed at the concert by
his childhood friend and arguably the UK’s foremost and most prominent Hammond organist, James Taylor of the James Taylor Quartet.
As teenagers, Sawhney and Taylor decided to form a band and went together to a music shop to buy a Casio keyboard. Bringing it back to Sawhney’s house they sat around working out various melodies
and ideas for their new project. Thirty-three years later they sat together at the Grand Organ of the Royal Albert Hall trying to figure out how this 140 year old monster works. This is
something that Nitin will undoubtedly be able to put his unique and distinctive stamp on.

After the huge success of their first 2 albums "Sitar and Bossa", and “D'Jazzonga” Bebo is back with perhaps his finest yet!
With the spirit of whatever "Nu Jazz" might be, with a way-cool cinematic bossa nova-jazz groove that could pass for a genuine late-'60s or early-'70s soundtrack recording, garnished with early
21st century electronic touches.
Bebo blends elements of dance music, jazz, trip-hop, swing and downtempo into one delicious, happy cocktail and suggests the exuberant insouciance of parties, rides in convertibles on warm,
full-moon nights, and an afternoon spent dancing barefoot with friends with a glass of sangria in your hand.
The Album opens with the sublime title track, Nu-Jazz at its best! The albums flows into “Havana Jazz” and “Mambo & Cola” – lots of Brazilain Jazz here!
Next is the swingin' dance tracks of Louis Prima’s “Sing Sing Sing” and “James Bonds theme” both done “Bebo style”. Funky beats of “Jazz or NuJazz” get you into the groove with sensual parisienne
singer Luma’s vocals on “that’s the way I like it” and London’s top Jazz singer Iain Mackenzie breaks your heart with “now and ever”.
Bebo gets back into cool seductive, jazz again with “chill radio bossa” and “the sun is shinin’” with “Jazz carnival” and “daikiri bossa dance” playing the album out.
Lastly Chin Chin has added a bonus remix track of “Sing Sing Sing” done by DJ Gabriel’s with a dance floor New jazzy-grooved beat put to it!

Austrian guitarist Gerald Gradwohl has been making great fusion records for years. A highly skilled soloist, Gradwohl's style combines the hip lines of a jazz player, with the technical
proclivities of a shredder. Though he has loads of session and sideman work in his background, his solo projects - particularly ABQ (Emarcy/Universal 2003), and Tritone Barrier (EMC 2007) - are
what put him on the map as a force to be reckoned with in the world-wide guitar community. Those albums featured keyboards, horns, and laudable guests such as Bob Berg, Kirk Covington, and Scott
Henderson. For his latest recording, Sally Beth Roe (Gtone), Gradwohl changes things up and goes for a bare-bones, stripped down approach. It's a pure trio album, recorded with few overdubs, and
no guests. The result is one of the rawest, rocking fusion discs I've heard in some time.
Right from the opening whammy bar outburst of the title track, the album's "live in the studio" feel is apparent. It's a fun, loose recording, and the chemistry between Gradwohl and his trio
mates Farid Al-Shami (drums), and Jojo Lackner (bass) is palpable throughout the disc. If I had to label Sally Beth Roe stylistically, "Heavy fusion" would be the best moniker to use, though some
tracks are closer to instrumental rock ("Time to Play"), or blues ("Blues For Ben," "Stevie"). Gradwohl seems to shine best on the groove-based fusion material, where he can stretch out
harmonically (as a writer and soloist), and lock in with his band for some dynamic group interplay. "Tunnel Elevator" and "Maths" are two great examples of this.
"No Matter" is another standout track that is pure fusion. It features some of Gradwohl's most legato-oriented playing on the album (though he still throws in some insane Gambale-esque sweeps), a
nice bass solo from Lackner, and a great memorable melody. Listening to this track and others, it's clear that Gradwohl knows well how to arrange this type of material for a trio setting. His
chords are often deployed in short staccato bursts, and there's plenty of doubled lines with the bass. There's a couple of fine ballads on the disc as well - the acoustic and improvisational
closer "Joni," and the deliberately paced "Hope" (which is not the Mahavishnu Orchestra piece of the same name, but it seems to take inspiration from some of that band's epic ballads).
Regardless of it's style, every song on Sally Beth Roe is driven by Gradwohl's guitar. Though he's got chops to spare (particularly with his picking), Gradwohl's great strength is how seamlessly
he can drop in a cool altered line or triad-based idea in middle of a shred-filled solo. And while he has an original musical voice, he's not afraid to wear his influences on his sleeve either.
Pieces like "Maths" and "Viper" have strong shades of post-Tribal Tech Scott Henderson, whereas "Wayne II" owes it's title and inspiration to Wayne Krantz. And like those great players, he's not
shy about his tonal choices. Gradwohl favors a heavier rock-oriented tone throughout most of the disc, which he sometimes kicks up a notch by adding over-the-top fuzz effects. It's a very natural
tone, however, which enhances the live feel of the entire album.
A lot of great fusion has come out of Europe lately, and Sally Beth Roe is no exception. Definitely recommended.

Quick, call the fire brigade. Having caused a succession of sizable tremors on the London gig circuit, consistently confounding expectations and drawing an ever-wider audience, the superb
Florence Joelle’s Kiss of Fire combo finally release their eponymous red-hot debut LP. Drawing upon classic whacked-out America roots music and injecting it with her own je ne sais quoi, Florence
Joelle and her highly distinguished ensemble (featuring the notorious leftfield occultist filmmaker Arthur I Walked With A Surrealist Lager on spooked voodoo drums and Flaming Star stalwart Huck
Whitney playing mercurial lead guitar) have fashioned a sound that is simultaneously timeless and yet entirely current. A neat trick if you can pull it off, and Florence Joelle’s Kiss of Fire
have done it with acres of style to spare.
Whether on the inspired covers (early jazz/swing drummer Chick Webb’s Mary Jane suffused ‘When I Get Low I Get High’ and the benchmark 1950s rhythm & blues opus ‘Unchain My Heart’) or
Joelle’s highly evocative original compositions (the opening propulsive statement of intent – with Lager freely channelling Sandy Nelson and the zombie beat of Nick Knox – ‘Hell Be Damned And
Look Out (You May Only Live Once)’, Latin flavoured ‘Watermelon Gin’, the rockabilly empowered ‘Never Thought I’d See The Day’, the licentious rhumba influenced ‘Gypsy Boy’ and the yearning
‘Stardust Merchant’), Florence Joelle’s Kiss of Fire ignite passion, drama and dancing feet. Florence Joelle’s Kiss of Fire act as an intoxicating conduit between such vital contemporary figures
such as Marc Ribot’s Los Cubanos Postizos, John Zorn, Chuck E. Weiss and Tom Waits with French chanson, vintage rock ‘n’ roll, loungecore and enduring jazz standards. In short, Florence Joelle’s
Kiss of Fire is one hell of a heady brew that should be imbibed in one sitting.
Perhaps even more importantly, Joelle’s wonderfully fractured and totally unaffected emotive voice speaks of experience and of a life lived to the hilt. The highs, the lows, the agony, the
ecstasy – its all here, unadorned, unfettered and cut loose by a committed bon viveur. Florence Joelle is a very welcome antidote to the bland and airbrushed female vocals that currently infect
popular music of every shade. As a girl growing up in Paris, Florence obviously collected and listened to early blues, doo-wop and 50s rock ‘n’ roll. She has distilled these influences, together
with the Parisian street music of bal musette and North African rai, into her own potent form of musical expression, powered by Lager’s bad juju percussion and Whitney’s angular guitar lines. If
you dig Gemma Ray or Richard Hawley, you should definitely find Florence Joelle’s Kiss of Fire dramatic widescreen sounds highly combustible stuff.
