DIFFERENT STROKES
AMANDA RAY “BLACK ELECTRO SCI-FI CHICK”
BOBBI MISICK of TRACE Magazine
"How many black electro sci-fi chicks do you got going on out there?" asks Atlanta-based ambient singer/songwriter Amanda Ray. "I want to be the first."
Truth be told, the number of black female artists in America that stray from the current pop-music formula that pairs hip hop beats with R&B vocals and boy-crazy lyrics can seem depressingly
low. But Amanda admits her style is always a little different. "I hate writing from one perspective," she says, "I want people to grow. Anytime I write, even if it's a love song, it's with a
different twist."
Amanda's debut album Mirrored Images is chock full of "different twists." With a deliberate progression that drops the listener off in various far off fantasies, her voice sounds like that of a
flickering pixie blowing into your ear, one syllable at time. Her appreciation for electronica came during her college years where she started devouring records from underground trip hop and
experimental musicians in Europe, particularly the UK. She decided she had to go there. "I started listening to Mono, Lamb, Bjork, Tricky, Goldie and definately a lot of Portishead and because a
lot of those groups came from the UK that naturally made me want to go. I talked my professors into letting me do an independent research in London...I felt like I needed to be there in order to
break into the genre."
She was disappointed to learn that kids in the UK were listing to the same pop music that saturated top 40 lists in the States. After a six-month stay in London and a few recordings she headed
back to Atlanta to finish her 2001 EP, "What's On Your Mind." Self-promoted, with the help of her local Tower Records, the EP was a big local success, even reaching the hands of an NBC producer
who featured one of the tracks on the Today Show.
Fast foward a few years, to a major move from the ATL to NYC to work with Brooklyn-based production team Super Buddha and a month-long hospital stay due to scar tissue from a previous surgery
that almost stopped production altogether, and we have Ray's first full-length album, Mirrored Images. She's not trying to break down any musical walls with this record, she says, but she does
want to show the world that it can't pigeonhole this black female artist. "It's been hard because there's no other black women out there for me to follow," she says. "I had no blueprint. But I
had a vision about who Amanda Ray is and I stuck to it."

From Official Myspace :
Mister

"Breaking the code" ouvre le bal. "In two minds" mélange sonorité grave
Symphonie toujours sur "Return of the rocking chair".

I’m relieved that, as bad as things seem to be, people are still making desert island discs in America. By desert island discs, I don’t mean Signals, Calls and Marches. As writer Jeff Koyen noted
back in the ‘90s: what the fuck would one need punk rock for on a desert island? Good, angry rock is the sound of mainland claustrophobia. Under our sad circumstances, it makes for an easy
emotional attachment. But it’s all context. If you’re on a desert island and you’ve got an adequate food supply, you may as well relax and recall certain aspects of the mainland fondly, if at
all.
Somebody makes perfect music for that, and that good soul employs the handle Nobody. The first record was good. This one’s better. It’s got a more refined musical palate and a more defined sense
of humor.
Within the first 10 minutes, you’ve already got a blasé cover of the Flaming Lips’ “What Is The Light?” In Elvin Estela’s hands, W. Coyne’s prog-rock Bic flicker becomes a rickety mix-‘n’-match
that rattles toward its conclusion seemingly by coincidence. The beat drops hard, and his sometime-colleagues in Beechwood Sparks and the Aislers Set pop in to help out.
“Wake Up and Smell The Millennium” takes a tack even less conceptually aggressive, running Curt Boettcher’s music over an unassuming beat and pretty much leaving it be. It works because Estrella
is smart, smart enough to know when he needn’t flash his skills. He reminds us by counterexample why so many “turntablist” records are so unlistenable.
The balance runs the gamut, from the delightfully askew “Poor Angular Fellow” to the Spanish toast “Con Um Relampago” to the stomping “Go Go Interlude Go” to the wistfully Nico’d “You Can Know
Her” (which features the understated vocals of forever up-and-coming balladeer Mia Dia Todd).
“Beat science” has been so thoroughly integrated into every corner of popular music, one barely notices it here. The rhythms that anchor And Everything Else are no more auspicious than gravity.
For the most part, it sounds like giddy, faux-innocent psychedelia filtered through a kaleidoscope, moody but never mopey.
I’ll bring this to the island. You bring Everything Went Black. We’ll see who leaves with fewer unnecessary ulcers.

d'arrière plan : Port Blue, Boy Is Fiction, The Flashbulb ou encore Kattoo.

Founded in 2001 in Prague, Czech Republic, Alvik has become a driving force behind the best sounds resonating in Europe today.
Alvik was built on their performances in Prague'ss smaller jazz clubs before graduating to larger halls, playing across Europe and touring the Czech Republic and the United States . With this
growth the group's sound has evolved into its present form with a style which is as easy to listen to as it is hard to define.
Alvik is the perfection of elements brought by each of its members: front singer and songwriter-singer Anya Stuart, who has helped the band cross into the international scene with her North
American roots; Bharata Rajnosek, hornman who cuts between sax, flute and trumpet; Petr Tichy, compelling stand-up bass player, Mishan Pajdiak on drums and samples from Prague and Audun Nedrelid,
with his Norweigian fingers gracing the keyboard.
Together, Alvik breathes a new kind of jazz that transgresses a wide variety of styles and tempos from abstract hip-hop to broken beats to drum and bass and Latin rhythms.
Over the years Alvik has developed more into a project. Hosting few concerts per year in their native Prague or at European festivals, Alvik thrives on the on-stage convergence of the many guest
artists involved in the project. Starting in 2004 with an intense collaboration with the Apollon Quartet and Jazz legend Emil Viklicky, Alvik has continued work with their original bass player
Martin Zpevak, and added many other names to the list such as Norwegian hornman Oyvind Svendsen, American vocalist Tonya Graves and Czech pianist/flutist Vitek Pospisil.
Most recently Alvik has enjoy a cooperation with Slovakian jazz drummer Martin Valihora , who played as a guest on their E.P. Cold June (2007) as well as the greater part of the Forms Apart album
(October 2008).
The collaboration spirit in Alvik continues well into the studio as they have had remixes done by artists from Prince of Tennis to Ishfaq

forefront of the scene. Amongst these musicians (loosely grouped under downtempo), Spangle call Lilli line has arisen as one of the flagship bands.
In keeping with Spangle call’s standard rock instrumentation, their style reaches well beyond downtempo, a relaxed and heavily electronic genre. While the band is often described as post-rock,
their sound is more of a compromise between the two. Songs are not bound by verse-chorus convention, but drift lazily, guided by a light melody. The guitars and varied percussion together with
numerous (and frequently spacey) electronic additions weave a sound that, while complex, flows very evenly. Otsubo Kana’s wispy vocals contribute an organic piece to the melody as well, while
adding to the relaxed atmosphere.
Spangle call Lilli line’s beginnings trace back to Otsubo and Fujieda, friends from art school, who began playing together in December of 1998. Sasahara and drummer Kabasawa, also friends from
university, joined in 1999 and 2000, respectively. The band was christened “Spangle call” (the “Lilli Line” to come later), derived from a Japanese pronunciation of “spangle” (“supankooru,”
chosen for its sound), while the “call” was a continuation from the “kooru” of “supankooru.” Their self-titled debut was issued in March of 2001 on P-Vine, a label known for electronic and jazz
units including Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden and Otomo Yoshihide.
The band continued their trademark style through their third album, 2003’s or, in which they aimed to consummate their established sound. The trying studio work leading up to or proved to be the
band’s breaking point, causing mental breakdowns in Otsubo and the February 2003 departure of their drummer, who had provided much of the creative direction for the album. With Kabasawa gone from
the lineup, Spangle call was free to indulge in influences such as R&B, soul, and Motown that their drummer, who had an affinity for lo-fi and post-rock, did not favor.
These changes surfaced in Spangle call’s April 2005 album Trace, which was nearly two years in the making (excluding their live release 68SCLL). With Trace, the members recount that they were
looking to remove the excess from their music and sound like a new band, as if the album was their debut. The new release was indeed different from its predecessors, with a poppier, R&B style
and tracks that were, on the whole, shorter than the usual Spangle call fare.
Shortly after Trace, the release of For Installation, more in tune with the band’s classic style, ensued in June. The tracks are mostly comprised of studio outtakes, but according to Fujieda,
“the feeling of the album will be clearly different” from that of Trace. Though nothing has been formally announced, the enterprising trio is gearing up for another release in the future.
