Afterglow est un album envoutant aux sonorités trés electroniques. Avant de se lancer dans une carriére solo, Dot Allison faisait parti du groupe One Dove ( au début des années 90) . Depuis que
de chemin parcouru et l'album est une véritable révélation. Les compositions sont soignées et les mélodies sublimes. Le tout est servi par une voix troublante et sensuelle qui rappelle celle de
Sarah Cracknell de Saint Etienne ( avec qui elle a travaillé sur le remix de How We Used To Live).

Le trip-hop est mort à la fin des années 90, c'est bien connu... Les années 2000 marquent un tournant pour le genre, et les disques ne sonnent plus comme à la belle époque. Pourtant, certains
groupes ne semblent pas avoir reçu le message. C'est le cas d'Elsiane, duo qui livrait en 2007 un premier album "Retour aux sources" étonnant.



Mais alors pourquoi en a-t-on si peu entendu parler de l'autre coté de l'Atlantique ? Parce que la vie est injuste, et que les formations de qualité en auto-production sont noyées au beau milieu
de la promotion incessante d'artistes souvent bien plus médiocres. Séchez vos larmes, le mal sera bientôt réparé.

Hybrid est en quelque sorte un album qui aurait pu naitre peu de temps après le très célèbre live de Portishead à New York. Outre les arrangements de cordes communs aux deux albums, le disque des
canadiens sonne presque comme si tout avait été enregistré en live. Une profondeur de son très appréciable, pour une musique vivante, grandement démarquée de ses contemporains. Autre bon point
pour Elsiane, une voix, une vraie. Alors certes, les voix de caractère ont toujours suscité des débats houleux parmi les auditeurs, et il est facilement compréhensible que certains saturent si
les dites voix ne les rendent pas amoureux instantanément. Ceci dit, Elsiane possède une chanteuse à la voix particulière qu'il est important de souligner tant elle sert admirablement la musique
du groupe.

Rajoutons à ça une production aux petits oignons, et des prestations lives impeccables. Pas encore convaincu ? Le duo a partagé la scène avec Tricky, preuve incontestable d'un talent et d'un
travail remarquable.



Hybrid entre par la petite porte dans le monde du trip-hop, mais saura s'imposer avec le temps. En attendant un deuxième album, il est temps de (re)découvrir cette pièce incontournable de notre
genre musical préféré.

I'm forcing myself to post something. I think I need to take a break from getting nowhere on my short story. My brain is also telling me to post something not asian, since it seems like I've been
writing only about Japanese artists lately, but whatever. This is easier to write about for me since I've already listened to it a billion times, I haven't posted any trip hop yet, and they're
one of my favorites in the genre. Anyway, this is the newest antennasia album after four years without a proper release. It has a slightly different feel to it compared to their earlier albums,
almost leaning more toward ambient music at times, while also toning down their earlier introspective and haunting beats. While their earlier style was a huge part of what made me love them, this
new direction isn't necessarily a bad thing, this is still a great album. At the same time though, I still wish I could hear a little bit more of that minimalistic bass heavy production from
their previous albums.



Like I said earlier, this album has a much lighter and more mellow sound than, say 2006's 23 Bluebird Street, Velo-city, but it's still distinctively antennasia. San's vocals are as beautiful as
ever, floating on top of nerve's melodies. Much like the production, her vocals also much lighter, used more like another instrument in the tracks (not sure if I can say that if I don't think
instruments were really used, oh well). Often, such as in Goats in a Blue Sky, she sings in almost a lazy slurred style, with many vocal melodies layered smoothly over each other, like a
continuous stream of consciousness. Listening to her is almost like floating in a dream, with the many melodies washing over you like waves.

Who doesn’t love some uptempo nujazz with a female vocalist? Suitable for the sunny days trend started a post ago, here’s Briskey, brain child of Gert Keunen, a journalist, record company manager
and concert promoter from Holland.



The band is a six-piece including a flugelhorn on some songs and you’ll realize how much the music is rooted in the 30s 40s big band era, in the first few seconds of “White would be Tacky“, the
brasswork is very groovy here. The second song has an incredible rimshot beat and wailing brass, and I think that’s the main reason I chose this song over others. There are many more good songs
on this album, and the album has a high fun factor, a decent pop-nujazz album. Check out if you like bands like Herbaliser, De-Phazz, St. Germain or labelmates Buscemi.

The second release from Ru Trip Community - "Imprints"! It includes both well-known crews that have already won their audience as well as very talented beginners. This compilation is quite
different from its predecessor. First of all it’s double! Its first part contains 16 choicest tracks. These are 16 songs proving that Russian trip-hop not only has the right to exist but is bound
to. The second part of the album is compiled of... remixes. Remixes of the same tracks made by the very same participants. But no one got to choose the songs he wanted to work with. Everything
happened in a promiscuous manner. Absolutely random picking gave all songs a new life. They gained an entirely different sound carrying the imprints of alternative musical vision. To make the
compilation even more extraordinary for maximum impression there is an individual booklet made for each track presenting the designer’s vision of it. Therefore each song demonstrates two
viewpoints on itself (the remix and the booklet) which illustrates the omnitude of Russian trip-hop.

Outer Dark displays Bill Laswell's penchant for working out compositional ideas at great length, breaking the 20-minute barrier on both of the album's instrumental pieces. Entirely a studio
creation, the music is the result of Laswell's (sounds) collaboration with Robert Musso (engineering, treatments) at Brooklyn, NY's Greenpoint Studios. The duo attempts to shape a composition out
of the dark ether on the opening "Chakra." It begins with a buzzing sitar drone (providing the Eastern flavor common in Laswell's music) and strummed guitar emerging from the murk. Disappearing
and returning throughout, the elements take on a sort of dizzying paranoia at song's end through their repetition. As for the ether itself, the musical backdrop is a drift of throbbing, amorphous
ambience comprised of mildly chilling keyboard washes and tube-like breezes. It's intriguing as atmosphere, but little else. "Ananta (Passing Dream)" is more interesting if only because of its
rhythm element. The compositional approach is roughly the same as a buzzing, wiry beat spends a good deal of the track trying to find a point of entry in a similar setting. Released on Germany's
Fax label, Outer Dark is like the sound of the universe's pulsations: music for the formation of heavenly bodies. Unconcerned with conventional development, it's forced to find a source of power
amidst the ambience. While the explorations contain enough substance for Laswell's serious fans, the music ultimately lacks the sort of muscle inherent in his best work.

Voici le genre de production de qualité à laquelle on est habitué de la part du netlabel iD.EOLOGY mais dont ne se lasse pas. Il s’agit cette fois d’un album de downtempo, soul, jazz vocal,
absolument irrésistible et que les amateurs ne se priveront pas d'aller découvrir. Le genre de petite chose qu’affectionnerait sans doute Gilles Peterson, tant la musique de Tracing Arcs rappelle
ce qu’on peut entendre sur les compilations du fameux DJ anglais.

Ultra facile à écouter, rempli de sonorités chaleureuses et porté par la voix sensuelle et puissante de Fran Kapelle, ce disque fait partie, incontestablement des plus belles réussites du
netlabel allemand depuis sa création.

Il y a des artistes chouchous dont les réalisations vont bien au delà de l’attente musicale. Matt Elliott fait partie de ceux-là. Les personnes qui le connaissent vous diront à quel point l’homme
qui se cache derrière l’artiste est quelqu’un d’extrêmement attachant. Pour l’avoir vu plusieurs fois en concert, j’ai toujours été bluffée par sa disponibilité et sa générosité. Ils ne sont pas
nombreux les artistes qui viennent se mêler au public d’une salle de concert pour suivre les prestations de ses compagnons de soirée plutôt que rester cachés en coulisse pour ne pas être
dérangés. Il y a un truc aussi avec Matt Elliott c’est qu’il est toujours malade, quasiment mourant au début de chaque concert. C’est un peu le gimmick des prestations du grand Matt : le géant
fragile. Et pourtant : plus il est mal plus ses concerts restent inoubliables. Matt est un grand perfectionniste, soucieux du moindre détail. Agenceur de talent de sons et mélodies il sait créer
des atmosphères musicales troublantes et oppressantes . Matt Elliott est certainement l’un des artistes qui exprime le mieux beauté triste de nos émotions profondes. The Third Eye Foundation
c’est le projet électronique avec lequel Matt se fit d’abord connaître. Little Lost Soul reste sans doute sa réalisation la plus emblématique de The Third Eye Foundation première époque.
D’autres, dont je fais partie sans honte, n’ont croisé la route de Matt que lors des ses album solos moins électro, plus tournés vers une musique folk aux accents slaves. Cela faisait dix ans que
The Third Eye Foundation était resté en suspend. Quelques premiers concerts lors de festivals espagnols au printemps dernier et déjà le bouche à oreille concernant ce retour était des plus
dithyrambiques. Alors forcément, quand on écoute The Dark, qu’on sait que Louis Warynski dit Chapelier Fou (autre chouchou Ici d’ailleurs) ou encore Chris Cole de Manyfingers ont collaboré à
cette nouvelle réalisation, nous ne sommes pas surpris par l’excellence du résultat. The Dark est un album de 5 morceaux dont on ne décroche pas facilement. Petites bombes électroniques, c’est
avec une douceur perverse qu’elles nous explosent en plein cœur.  Les musiciens sauront mettre en avant l’originalité de la composition rythmique et les agencements sonores judicieux qui
portent l’auditeur jusque dans ses plus douloureuses introspections. Que ce soit sur album ou sur scène, on ne ressort jamais totalement indemne d’une rencontre avec Matt Elliott.
