‘Renegades’ is the highly anticipated new LP from Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL), out on November 15th on Tru Thoughts. Recently unveiled in a special feature on long-time supporter Gilles Peterson’s
BBC Radio 1 show, the impressive album is also gaining early props from KCRW’s Jason Bentley and other international tastemakers.
MdCL’s ninth solo long player under his own name, ‘Renegades’ finds the prolific producer and musician bridging a transition between two continents, and mining a rich seam of personal creativity
and inspiration, having recently relocated to Los Angeles after ten years in London.
Alongside his own impeccable skills on beats, basslines, synths and more, the record features a cast of guest performers from both sides of the Atlantic, including vocalists nia andrews (Common,
Janelle Monae), Tawiah (Warners) and Bembe Segue; percussionist extraordinaire Sheila E (Prince); bassist Pino Palladino (D’Angelo/The Who); strings virtuoso and Flying Lotus collaborator Miguel
Atwood-Ferguson; drummers Lil’ John Roberts (US), with whom MdCL describes having a musical ‘telepathy’, and Richard Spaven (UK); guitarist to the stars Mike Feingold; and new label-mate Omar,
the king of UK soul. Working with the cream of international musicians is something MdCL relishes: “Everyone that’s been brought in on this record is free to be themselves. I love hearing people
come together and bring their own vibe to something.”
The overall sound of the album hinges on MdCL’s energetic, pristine production – club cuts flavoured with soul, funk, tech-Afrobeat and Latin twists topped with fine, organic songwriting;
all orchestrated by MdCL showcasing his ability to meld the science of beat-making with musicianship. He sums up the approach: “My whole thing with this kind of production is balancing
electronics and programming with organic and live musicianship. I love for that line to be blurred almost to the point where you don’t know which is which.”
Having long been a first-call collaborator for a wide range of artists, MdCL has lent his skills as producer, performer, composer and more, to over 250 records by Jill Scott, Jody Watley, Leon
Ware (Marvin Gaye/Michael Jackson), Dame Shirley Bassey, Sandra St. Victor (The Family Stand/Chaka Khan), and a host of others. He recently collaborated on the “Fairplay” single by Zed Bias,
which is all over BBC R1 and 1Xtra. Current extra-curricular projects include monthly LA residencies such as Church, a jazz night he runs at Angel’s in Santa Monica featuring surprise guests;
Scored, in which he directs an improvised soundtrack project to classic films; and the house music party Body Rock, with Sole Channel’s Alix Alvarez and Nef Nunez. Studio projects include the
Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra Big Band Project; album production for Sy Smith and Sandra St Victor; and collaborating on Jody Watley’s new LP. He is also going back to his roots, playing jazz piano
for the celebrated Dwight Trible (former singer with Pharoah Sanders).

Lots of incredible releases this year. I'm just getting (absolutely) addicted to the latest jams of Elder & Tia Carrera (which I'll post later), and then this beast comes out of nowhere!
Revelation & Mystery, just look at that cover art..
Samsara Blues Experiment is one of those bands who can instantly make my day. These fine German guys play stunning jams influenced by all the pages of the 70's/ stoner/ doom/ psychedelic/ space
catalogue. They have a highly interesting & dynamic approach to the genres we all adore, and transform it into their own distinctive formula. A groovy, trippy mix of jammin' stoner
psychedelica. They did it again with this record: and it's alot grittier & straightforward this time. Any fan of kick-ass rock with a psychedelic touch should give this one a try. Top 10
material right here..

Cap-Vert: Raiz di Djarfogo presents the sounds of one band, the "Roots (Raiz) of Fogo Island" (This island is also represented in An Archipelago of Music). They are a typical old time group sound
of guitars and shakers, centered around the vocalist. Besides mornas and coladeiras, the band is trying to revive song styles associated with local saints' festivals. Some of these are dependent
on lyrics for effect, and don't particularly work for someone who does not understand the language. But there are some interesting local variations of the music of Cape Verde and this band has
just the right sort of relaxed approach to be enjoyable. There is some very nice stuff here, but I am particularly taken by the double album anthology. If you are looking for one album from Cape

The praise for Gigi was universal and unabashed. The Miami Herald rightfully called Gigi "Ethiopia’s gift to the world," while The NY Times described her sound as "full of unexpected angles and
modal curves." Her vocals, according to XLR8R, "sounds sweeter than a cup of Ethiopian honey wine"; while the Village Voice agreed saying she has "not just a luxuriously rich voice but an
unassumingly cosmopolitan presence." Gigi is an ambassador of ancient sound with modern sensibilities.
Taking the world music scene by storm with her self-titled debut, Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw picks up right where she left off five years ago with Gold & Wax. Producer Bill
Laswell is again behind the boards, and he's assembled another cosmopolitan cast of backing musicians, who range from Guns N' Roses guitarist Buckethead and Indian production team Midival Punditz
to P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell and jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer. Ever the master aural architect, Laswell finds a way fuse styles as well as the players' strong personalities into a
seamless whole. Gigi herself soars siren-like over the top of ambient leaning tunes, or she digs in with her plaintive high-pitched voice on more rhythmically anchored pieces. Standouts include
the English-language "Utopia," the rhythmically churning and horn-driven "Salam," and the anthemic "Gomelayeye." Not much of a departure from her debut, but there's no point in complaining about
more of a very good thing. -- Tad Hendrickson
The long-awaited follow-up to Gigi’s stellar debut has finally landed. On her second effort, Gold & Wax, Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw has again proven her ability to seamlessly work the songs of
her Ethiopian ancestry into a contemporary vocal sound befitting the worlds of jazz, electronica and even dub-inspired African rhythms. Produced by Bill Laswell, Gold & Wax maintains an
illustrious gleam; every instrument falls perfectly into place, centered on the singer’s near-angelic range.

Deckard – An Extensive Odyssey
If you were looking for exceptional producers in the Munich area in the late 90s / early 2000s you may have heard of Deckard – the artist pseudonym of Attila Makai, which is inspired by Rick
Deckard out of the movie “Blade Runner”. In the “early days” of the internet there also existed his own platform under the name “Foundation Crew”, a melting pot for a diverse bunch of like
minded producers and sound enthusiasts. However, Deckard is one of the few of them that continued their artist careers successfully.
It must have been around 2003 when the first demo CDs by Deckard were spreading locally. Even his early works may have been good enough to have been released officially on a label.
However, Makai let his music ripe step by step. First extracts from his large assortment of tracks found the way to his first vinyl release, a limited stamped white label 12” entitled “Das
Abstrakt EP”. This release opened doors for Deckard: not only DeBug Magazine praised the release and gave it the highest rating, it even stated that it is “one of the very rare EPs that can
rival early releases by (DJ) Vadim”. Although this statement may not really be fitting regarding the musical style, it still emphasizes the fact that Deckard can easily be named in line
with any top producer out of the left field electronica genre.
The „Das Abstrakt EP“ also lead to the fact that Equinox founder Günter Stöppel released the „Noir Desire“ EP the following year, as part of the Equinox 10inch Series. It was the successful
beginning of his collaboration with the German label, that is now residing in Berlin. Furthermore, two additional tracks were released in 2005 on the Swiss label Ish Records and their
Instrumental Hip-Hop / Electronica / Beat compilation “The Now Factor”.
Afterwards, it temporarily got more quiet around Deckard – his newly started studies as a sound engineer gave him less time to work on music. However, during that period he was able to
redefine his style – in more ways than one. Between 2006 and 2008 a couple of new tracks and remixes were released that left marks. For example, he released the breakbeat tune
“Dignity Of Men” on the “One Year & A Day” series that later even made it to a DJ Food mix. Furthermore, on this 12” single and the album, he shared space with producers like Free The
Robots, 2econd Class Citizen, Brenmar or Deadpan Darling. For the last-mentioned artist project, that exists of Blue Sky Black Death and singer Ceschi, he was additionally invited to remix
the song “Laughtrack”. On this track, as well as for rappers like Audio88 or Bushwac, he proved his ability to work with vocals and also to remix songs.
On his “come back” release in 2009, the “Future World” EP, we could finally hear the Deckard, that we can now experience on his LP debut: complex sound layers and spheres, shifting between the
rhythms of hauling impulsive machinery and spacy melodies… Yes, this EP was a fascinating outlook on “For A Better Tomorrow”. An album that has become a strong and interweaved work that
will keep listeners excited from beginning to end. A thrilling and drifting sound experience from start to finish.
The pathway to “For A Better Tomorrow” may have been an extensive odyssey for Deckard himself - but it has definitely been worth waiting for.
