This year is shaping up to be the one when everyone is dropping their much-delayed albums. Saigon shocked the hell out of everyone and released Greatest Story Never Told, Joell Ortiz overcame his
litany of label issues with Free Agent, and Vakill finally followed up that track list that came out in 2009 with the actual album: Armor of God. At this rate, even the Detox release seems
feasible.
Vakill, the Chicago MC with the New York-spitter style, still raps like he’s missed some meals despite the critical successes of The Darkest Cloud and Worst Fears Confirmed. Armor of God is
equal parts biscuits-and-burners and knowledge-dropping thought-provokers. The first third of the album, from “Hi Ate Us” through “Sick Cinema”, is full of what we’ve come to know and love
about Vakill: tough talk and street lessons delivered over mostly piano and guitar-driven production by Molemen member Panik, with Jake One also showing up for “Armor of God”.
Vakill is pure propane on “Mean Mug Muzik” and “Appetite to Kill”, songs that yield such scorching lines as “An animal, on his corporate grizzy, spit divine as Corpus Christi, flowing hellfire
until your corpse is crispy,” and “A young lion at heart dying to start/smart bombs flying from replying remarks/I am the spark from the iron occupying the dark/prying apart n*****s skulls, fuck
trying to chart!” As is tradition with rap albums, the incendiary rhymes are done early as Vakill mellows into “Wild Wild”, a tribute to his old stomping grounds in Chicago like Racine
Courts and Ragtown, and “Bi-Polar”, which examines various love-hate relationships (“Gangstas need love too, but hate when you notice.”)
Though the album is just short of an hour, Vakill requires an attentive ear and 17 songs can be a chore, an affliction that also claimed Greatest Story Never Told. While multiple songs hold
replay value individually, the project as a whole is not something that begs to played repeatedly. But duration issues aside, lyrically and sonically, Armor of God is among the upper
echelon of releases so far this year and a fitting return for one of CHI’s finest.

By Matt Edsall
from http://www.popmatters.com
As part of his “Nightwatchman Speaks” YouTube series, Tom Morello explained that he switched from major label Epic to the smaller, indie label New West because “the artist came first …The way
that the record industry has changed, major labels like Epic, and Sony who runs them, their revenue streams today are all about ringtones rather than about content, necessarily, and they’re
looking for very polished pop, American Idol-like hit makers”. Ironically, though, Morello has made the most commercial Nightwatchman record to date with World Wide Rebel Songs. Commercial enough
for a major label, perhaps not, but the very definitive line between Morello’s folk acoustic alter-ego and his Rage Against the Machine virtuoso has most definitely been crossed here.
On his first two albums, the Nightwatchman resembled Neil Young’s solo days, playing straight-up acoustic folk in which the lyrics served as the driving force of the songs, but having now
enlisted a backing band dubbed the “Freedom Fighter Orchestra” (Dave Gibbs on bass, Carl Restivo on guitar and piano, Chris Joyner and keyboards, and Eric Gardner on drums), Morello just created
his version of Crazy Horse (though he doesn’t come within a mile of writing “Down By the River”). It’s not that the album turns the amps to 11 like Rage Against the Machine or Audioslave, but
minus “Branding Iron” and “God Save Us All”, there is no subdued song. Whether it’s the boisterous, riff-doubling rock of “It Begins Tonight” or the choir-heavy “Stray Bullets”, World Wide Rebel
Songs looks to be the record that could mark the Nightwatchman’s transformation (or Morello’s reversion).
Lyrically, Morello wouldn’t even pursue this project if he didn’t intend for every track to be a tirade against the government and foreign policy, so unlike the music, none of that is any
different here. In fact, coming off his EP, Union Town, which raised money for the Wisconsin campaign against Gov. Scott Walker and his bill to end collective bargaining, Morello gets even
heavier into universal (as the title would assume) topics on Rebel Songs. On “Save the Hammer For the Man”, co-writer Ben Harper shouts one of the deepest concerns of the record: “Politics,
apocalypse, start to look the same/ The price of my redemption will mean the end of living”. This bleak outlook on societal decadence is mirrored on “Speak & Make Lightning” when Morello
states over country flair, “I’m pacing and worrying all night and day/ Neither you or your mama do anything I say”. As is the Nightwatchman’s purpose, he makes an effort to remind society that
change is only inspired by the public’s desire to earn it.
In terms of the Nightwatchman’s transformation from acoustic folklore to electric rock godliness, that’s exactly where this record’s primary flaw resides. Though Rage fans could rejoice at his
meshing of the two styles, Morello’s musical indecision ruins the integrity for which the Nightwatchman has always stood: choose a side and fight for it. Rebel Songs is too much of a mixed bag,
though, blaring hard rock on one track, then walking a bass line with chimes on another, then playing solo folk for which this project’s always been known. It comes across as Morello’s own
impatience with the project at this point. Barring that Rage’s set at LA Rising doesn’t end the Nightwatchman’s career this fall, Morello’s going to have to pick a side on the fourth LP, or else
he might start to lose a few listeners.

With the wheels well-oiled and on full steam The Pepper Pots train arrives with its fourth album “Train to your lover”, a new step forward in a career in constant evolution, yet continuing within
the same parameters - those of finding that “Old School” sound of the best albums of the mid-60´s.
To find this sound The Pepper Pots have recorded the album in their own recording studio “Black Pepper Studio”, using an entirely analogical setup and using similar instruments to those
used in the golden era of Soul. Each band member has collaborated in each of the tasks involved in the recording: the composition, arrangements, production, mixing…..and the final mastering touch
comes from the hands of the legendary Bob Ohlsson, Motown sound engineer during the classic period of the label -between 1965 and 1972, working with leading artists including Stevie Wonder,
Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Smokie Robinson & the Miracles, The Spinners or Gladys Knight & the Pips.
The result is 12 own tracks that stretch from the best of the Supremes to early Jackson 5, from deep soul ballads of Doris Duke to ground-breaking northern soul; classic sounds and influences The
Pepper Pots have sprinkled with new life with some of their best songs to date.
With 300 appearances and counting, The Pepper Pots have moved audiences in concerts around the globe: Tokyo, Osaka, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, London, Moscow, Helsinki, Vienna,
Verona, Prague, Bern, Barcelona, Madrid… as well as featuring at major festivals such as South by Southwest (Austin-Texas), Summer Jam Reggae Festival (Cologne-Germany), Rock for People (Hradec
Králové – Czech Republic), BAM Festival (Barcelona-Catalonia), Black Music Festival (Girona-Catalonia) and many others.
Liner Notes
"I worked as a recording and mastering engineer at Motown Records in Detroit between 1965 and 1972. People often ask me “What is the secret of the Motown Sound.” Berry Gordy, Motown’s founder,
has frequently answered with just the word “LOVE!” I really couldn’t agree more.
We loved what we were doing and we loved each other. It was something I could feel the first time I walked in the studio door and something that was just as unusual as it was remarkable. We were
amazed that our recordings had actually broken down cultural barriers and brought people together by expanding their sense of who they were. I can’t say anybody intended this outcome or deserves
any particular credit for it however I’m immensely proud to have played my tiny role.
What I love about the Pepper Pots is the fact that I can feel the love that they have poured into their songs and performances. What more could one possibly ask for?"

Like many gifted artists, Y’akoto is a bit of a transient. This half Ghanaian, half German soul singer spent the majority of her life shuttling between Western and Central Africa and Western
Europe, and it’s clear that there is some cross cultural harmony in her music. The West African rhythms are apparent in a few of her songs, but the major element I hear is the brusque femininity
of an American jazz singer like Billie Holiday. Sensuous is probably the only word that can accurately describe Y’akoto’s voice. She has a smoky timbre that stands out most prominently on the
title track of her new album, Baby Blues. The song is just the type of bare bones, morose fare you’d expect on song about lost love. A piano, a distant grumbling drumb, and Y’akoto’s sultry voice
are all you’re going to get on this one… of course if you’re like me, you’ll get that and a few dour memories of your past relationships.
If you aren’t keen on tearing up over failed romances, feel free to take a listen to “Tamba.” It’s just as beautifully moody as “Baby Blues,” only it will make you want to yell at a
politician…you know, instead of an ex-lover.

Defining Song: “Paper Tiger”–The track melts into a wash of strings and the sultry trappings of Kummerle’s voice. The aesthetically pleasing tune is a short lived two minutes, compelling the
finger to hit repeat with obsessive recurrence.
Trip Hop is tricky. While it can seem effortless, anyone who has witnessed Massive Attack or Portishead live knows that every pore is dedicated to the music and the visual landscape. Asheville
can now claim some of that seemingly facile cool thanks to local band, Paper Tiger, a duo consisting of jazz/lounge singer, Molly Kummerle and DJ/producer, Isaac Gottfried.
The two met about seven years ago through a mutual love of music and all the trappings Asheville offers for artists. When Molly wasn’t performing as her alter ego cabaret star, Ruby Slippers, and
Issac wasn’t dropping beats as MINGLE, they tinkered with sounds that slowly melded into what is now Paper Tiger.
Their debut album, Me Have Fun, slowly arose from its comfy chair and entered the public arena in January, 2011. The end result is a sublime mix of sneaky keyboards, unique samples (including a
baby coo) that ambush the ear, and Kummerle’s silky voice to guide us through the world of Paper Tiger.
The comparisons to the Trip Hop masters are evident, but it would be unfair to namedrop folks like Thievery and end there. Me Have Fun is an original work of art and deserves its own recognition.
It’s a big world inside the album with a surprise at every turn.
“Happy Hour” starts the album with a horn revelry and a sample audience clap and ends a half hour later on “Last Call”, with Kummerle’s voice giving way to a grainy vinyl sample of a simple
piano. In between lies the adventure. “Hibiscus” hits the funky stride with violin trickles and graceful keyboards thanks to guest Chuck Lichtenberger (of Stephanie’s Id). “Folded Laundry” plays
up to the metaphor of complicated relationships without surrendering to maudlin, and “Hugo” sits complete with dark swagger and Beach Boys sampling.
Me Have Fun is a an album to cozy up to with bottle of wine (or absinthe for the saucier minded) or to jump start a party in need of voltage. It works either way. Kummerle and Gottfried own so
many ideas on this album that it will compel the listener to have different emotions with every listen. It’s a good thing, and I hope their future output continues this myriad of escapades.
