Woke up with a samba feeling today. This 1981 LP by
Alcione has a lot of the earlier stuff. It sounds well produced
like it should coming from '81, but the music has a strong 70's
feel. I think this woman has a unique voice, so powerful, so strong,
I can't seem to get enough of it. The LP is a bit dusty maybe
but it contains some great songs, track 12 even has
an African title and touch, rare, hope U like.

Can't Kill A Dame With Soul, out 6th February 2012 on Tru Thoughts, is the second solo album from Kinny, an opera chanteuse turned singer-songwriter whose lifelong passion for reggae, jazz and
soul music intertwines with her classical training for a unique and potent style. The new LP finds this self-proclaimed 'freestyle improv vocalist' channelling her trademark impulsive, freeform
stylings into a more reflective set of deeply personal songs that explore escalating struggles with mental instability and identity.
Kinny's captivating power and range of vocal expression, her diverse cultural heritage (a mix of Jamaican, Native Canadian and Swedish), and the twists and turns her life has taken all feed into
the music; and her richly emotive sound never shies away from a dancefloor-filling groove or a stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow. The warm, immersive and soulful soundscape created by
Norwegian producer/musician duo Souldrop (who also produced two tracks on her first album) provides the perfect cocoon for Kinny's crystal-edged voice, the eclectic sonic palette ranging
organically from big bassy beats and keys to acoustic instrumentation and percussion.
This time, on 'Can't Kill A Dame With Soul' she worked exclusively with Souldrop, fellow residents of the vibrant musical town of Bergen, Norway. Creating music in one room with her production
team, rather than across several international borders, made for a totally different recording experience.
"It can be exciting, making tracks with people on the other side of the World and hearing the results. But for me – and I think you can hear this on the record - this way was much better for the
album making process. We felt more like a unit creating something and fed off of each other's energies..."

The Legend Of Mugison...
When Tom Waits astutely pointed out that "no dog ever pissed on a moving car" Mugison must have been nodding in bemused agreement. Impulsively nomadic, creatively restless, Mugi is the kind of
post-modern dude that flows with the flux - one of those ants-in-the-pants artists that naturally negates stagnation and actively seeks out new challenges. His two key albums to date - 2003's
"Lonely Mountain" and 2005's "Mugimama: Is This Monkey Music?" (released on Matthew Herbert's Life? and Accidental & IPECAC labels, respectively) are significant snapshots of the Icelander's
maverick style. Delightfully shambolic, they both evince a passion for provocative sonic mischief as well as good old-fashioned songwriting. Mugi's endearing DIY ethic (he taught himself
everything he knows) allows him to haphazardly hurl everything from glitchy electronica and avant-noise to Bonnie Prince Billy-esque ballads and soaring choruses into his sorcerer's saucepan.
Somehow it all fits together, for he is the Mugician. In the three years since touring "Mugimama..." he settled in Sudavik, a miniscule fishing village in the remote Westfjords, raised a family,
traded his laptop for a flesh-and-blood rock & roll band and set about reinventing himself and his sound. The result? One of the great rock & roll albums of the century. "I listened to
hundreds of CDs," says the maestro. "I became aware that artists like John Lee Hooker, Hendrix, Screaming Jay, Bowie, Dylan, The Beatles, Aphex Twin, Björk, Sepultura, the Pixies and Tom Waits
all had one thing in common: they were all expressing true feelings and there were no compromises." "Mugiboogie," his third official solo release, was recorded in his home studio, which offers
views out onto silent, ancient fjords. Mugi put everything he had into the project. He worked 16 hours a day, started drinking and smoking again, and didn't just flirt with a nervous breakdown
but got into bed with one and spent quite a bit of time fighting to get back out. But the aim - to achieve something classic, something visceral and "beyond the norm" - was ultimately achieved.
Click-tracks were foresworn to get that old school standards feel. Songs were played over and over again until they were perfected, exorcised of any superficiality. "There was to be no time
reference, no time frame," says Mugi. "The lyrics had to be straight to the point and all the songs played with eyes closed and always in a state of emergency. I had to ensure that all
pretentiousness was deleted from the songs. All nearly's, all maybe´s. Every song had to sound like it was the last song I'd play if the world was going down." Brimming with emotion and freighted
with recognizable musical references, "Mugibogie" is a mind-trip back to yesteryear when music was free from categorization, when gothic guitars towered and scintillated and when you could hear
guts being spilled out all over the record. From opener "Mugiboogie", with its swirling Hammond, wailing guitar and loping drum rhythms to the foot-tapping blues of "The Pathetic Album" and the
grindingly sensual "Jesus Is A Good Name To Moan," plus a couple of seriously heartfelt ballads, Mugi has crafted a modern classic. The record has already sold over 10,000 copies in Iceland
alone. When it's released internationally next month, you'll feel the earth move too.

Anyone tapped into the pulse or keeping score of modern electronic music has probably heard of Timo Garcia. Straddling the fine line between underground darling and big room, big tune dance floor
arsonist, his numerous releases on the circuit's biggest and best labels has been well documented as he kicks off 2012 ranked number 235 DJ in the world by the weekly Muso global top 1000 DJ poll
(2nd January, 12)
In a world when DJs and producers are ten-a-penny and the hype machines peddle mediocrity as if it were something special, it can be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. As such, the
currency de jour is consistency & recommendations…
His consistency in the studio has culminated in ‘Wonderlust Bug’; his acclaimed debut artist album with some of the world’s biggest names queuing up to recommend it…
[Sasha] “The Hang Drum track is amazing - as is Release, Wonderlust and Lady Luck and the mixed album flows wonderfully too, keep it up mate”. [Laurent Garnier] “Great work…Great for big room
business.” [Timo Maas] “Great album...v trippy and great variety!”. [M.A.N.D.Y.] “Solid collection of tracks. Well done!”
But talk is cheap, action stands out, and Timo comes up trumps again! His recent release on Sharam’s Yoshitoshi imprint recently graced the Beatport top 10 Tech charts for well over five months
with many world class DJs citing it in their personal top 10’s and Defected featuring it on their In The House Brazil ’11 compilation.
2010 also saw the release of a double CD, littered with remixes from his album tracks by production heavyweights that include DJ Pierre, Onionz, Eric Kupper and James Harcourt. It is a testament
to Timo’s calibre that such big names are ready to remix his work and is a pleasant shift from him doing the remixing – his deft touch can be heard on remixes of such luminaries as Leftfield,
Justice, DJ Pierre, Louis Vega, Robert Owens, Coldcut, Danny Howells and Ian Brown and he is constantly on the lookout for ways to add his inimitable sound to wide-ranging projects including a 14
track ambient album under his new ‘T_Mo’ guise.
His infamy has spread among the label bosses who set the trends and create the future-heroes of our worlds. Yoshitoshi, OFF, Compost, Skint, Southern Fried, 303 Lovers, Nervous, Audio Therapy,
Dieb Audio, Cr2 & Toolroom are just some of the world-famous imprints who have clamoured to get a piece of Timo’s brilliance. And his recent collaborations with X-Press 2, Jerome Sydenham and
DJ Pierre all saw their global release in 2011 too.
It seems incredible that he still has time to DJ around the world as well as working behind the scenes engineering and mixing down many other artists’ projects in both his London and Brighton
based studios. Last summer saw him play the main stage at London’s biggest Dance music festival ‘South West Four’ as well as headlining festival stages from Brazil to India; but this is a man who
has both a dedication and a love for his craft and this is something that he exudes, whether behind the decks or in the studio.
Whether you like your music to be played in the comfort of your own home, in grimy underground sweat-holes, or in extravagant and celebrious locales, the sublime and sensual sounds of Timo Garcia
are guaranteed to deliver.
