    Mos Dub by Max Tannone

A self proclaimed combination of an “epic fist pumping dubsteppy downtempo saga,” Pretty Lights’s newest album Making Up A Changing Mind does not disappoint. Opening with the driving beat of “Still Rockin” Pretty Lights, brainchild of Derek Vincent Smith, combines elements of hip-hop, electronic driven sounds, and old school samples to create an electronic journey through time and space. Pretty lights is unlike any other band I have listened to, with a satisfying blend of solid beats with innovative electronic sounds that create an airy-atmospheric feel to all of their songs. It is as if you are transported to the main deck of an alien spacecraft, entangled in a passionate space tango that has endured for all of eternity. Many of the tracks have an echoey feel that was reminiscent of Iannis Xenakis’s “Interlude” for the Philips Pavilion in Brussels. Their songs often include samples of both old songs as well as sounds from nature and the world around us. In this way they follow and extend the legacy of music concrete in this new generation of electronic music.
The first track on the album is “Still Rockin,” and it sets the pace of the album. They sample real sounds from the world, such as people speaking. But they also create the feel of recreation of real things through electronic synthesis. For example they include this steadily rising, chirping, that sounds much like a bird flying up and away would, were it made by a computer. There is also a signature “wha-wha” type effect employed in many of their sounds. It creates a rhythmic feel as well as a distinctly electronic wavelength feel to the songs. This is accompanied by what sounds like someone tapping on a metal pipe in an empty cavernous room. It then shifts instantly into a retro-funk type of horn riff, followed by more heavily altered sounds. They are hard to identify as they are unlike most anything I have heard in non electronic music.
Many of the songs follow a similar formula to the first, with various variations throughout. However one thing I found most compelling about nearly every piece was the coherence in sound and tempo throughout each individual piece. It was as if each song had a theme and each sample and electronic sound fit perfectly into an intricately woven electronic tapestry of unrivaled beauty. There is a level of hip-hop and soul that melds into an almost glittery extravaganza. The twinkling or tinkling sounds, something like running your hands through a bowl of tiny metal beads, are reminiscent of the crackling of glass in Xenakis’s interlude. The sounds are often cloud like and certainly ambient, as Pretty Lights layers on sound after sound until it is difficult to distinguish one from the other or the origins of either.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live at the National in Richmond, VA last fall and it was an experience I will not soon forget. One unique aspect to the show was the combination of the main electronic elements with a live drummer providing the drum track. Smith manned what appeared to be some sort of MIDI controller along with the requisite turn tables of any DJ. It was refreshing to see an actual performance, by both man and machine, and not simply a man behind a laptop pressing play. Pretty Lights takes the foundations for electronic music, laid by Xenakis and others, and draws from it and adds to it to create an entirely new and exciting sound.

A very funky, soulful, urban sound that will evoke images of late night lounges in the hippest part of the city. "How Ya Like Me Now" brings on some retro styles and showcases Matt's signature lead sound. Carl Burnett adds his magic touch on production (Larry Carlton, Boney James, etc). Seduction, I Will Be With You, Gas Lamp Groove, Family Funktion all deliver a very chilled out smooth experience that blends R&B and Smooth Jazz. There is also the pleasant surprise "Great Soul." A very unique track that delivers a mix of jazz, hip hop, and Bollywood Indian grooves (produced by Chris Marshak) The guitar style on this tune is reminiscent of John Mayer. There is the emotional "Gratitude" that brings an unforgettable melody. Don't forget about the very funky Uptown that features funkmaster Kenny Harris on bass.

I was very excited to be asked to review Katchafire's third studio album, Say What Your Thinking, as I am a big fan of their two previous releases, Revival (2003) (which featured the highest selling NZ single of 2003) and Slow Burning (2005). Both albums gained high praise.

For this release, the seven-piece crew stepped into Auckland's York Studios at the end of 2006 with a different line-up.  The very talented Thompson Hohepa (guitarist/vocals) left the group as did highly acclaimed NZ bassist, Ara Adams-Tamatea. The bands original bass player, Tere Ngarua, is back on bass duties with Ara continuing on as the groups booking agent.

Katchafire keep going from strength to strength and Say What Your Thinking is no exception! All aspects of this album impressed me from the production to the song-writing. Katchafire have put together the prefect sound track for summer!

The album kicks off with the title track, Say What Your Thinking, which begins with an awesome sax intro before it breaks into an infectious skanked-out catchy hook. It has some beautiful backing singing giving it a very soulful feel. Say What Your Thinking is the perfect introduction to Katchafire's feel good vibes if you're a first time listener of their music.

Now Girl is the second track and is an excellent lovers tune for the ladies, with a nice Island feel and a very catch hook. There are also several other standout tracks for me. The very dubby J-Dubb with a very heavy bass line is sure to rattle your insides on a big rig. This World is another feel good track depicting the plight of the world today and Meant To Be is another lovers tune with a mean bass line and very catchy horn section!

Katchafire also have an extra instrumental track, Agent-H, which is not included on the album release but can be purchased through iTunes as a single release.

Whether you're already a Katchafire fan or if you haven't heard them before, Say What Your Thinking is a must have for summer!! Big up to Katchafire for bringing such sweet sounding good vibe tunes!

Another sunny Monday in London (a rare occurence of late) but before I head out to London Fields for a boozy afternoon of fun and frolics, I thought I better give you a quick heads up on a little album that’s been released today. After just over two years since his debut 12″, the epic dancefloor tune, “You Will Save Me” arrived on the ever consistent Wah Wah 45s label, Scrimshire delivers his first album for the label entitled “Along Came The Devil One Night”, available from all good music stores now on both CD and MP3. Although it seems that its taken a bit of time for the album to see the light of day, personally I, and a few other people I know who’ve already heard it, believe that it’s definitely been worth the wait. Having delved into the LP over repeated listens during the past few weeks, I think Mr Adam Scrimshire has probably completed one of the first essential UK soul albums of 2009. That may be a bit of a grand statement for a Monday afternoon in May and especially from someone who has had the pleasure of knowing him for a year or two, but casting all that aside and just slipping “Along Came The Devil One Night” in your music player should at least confirm that you are indeed listening to something a little bit special. Clocking in at just over 43 minutes long and after numerous revisions, three previous vinyl releases (all holding exclusive non album cuts, versions and remixes – The King Knut remix of “Mistaken” being a personal highlight – go seek) and a host of live shows, Scrimshire delivers a succint album incorporating a range of styles from jazz to soul, folk to funk, and pulls it all together to produce a work of sheer cinematic brilliance. From the opening piano intro of “The Low Road” through the subsequent tracks “People We Spoke To” and the title track (probably the strongest three track opening that I’ve heard on an album recently), right through to closing track “I Have Come To You”, a melancholic duet with label mate Stac, everything fits together nicely, without any unnecessary skits or filler cuts. Just a solid nine tracks of soulful, uplifting, contemporary music. Scrimshire, who produces and plays a range of instruments on the album, is joined by a talented bunch of musicians and singers, including Jake Telford (OK_Ma) on sax and flute, vocals from Inga-Lil Aker, Rob Hynd, Claire Lauren (the voice on the standout jazz track “Springtime”) and Stac, plus guest strings from The Middlewood Sessions. But don’t just take our word for it, cop the tracklist and check the MP3 snippets below to check out all the tracks in their full unabounded (but edited) glory and then hop on over to Scrimshire’s website to catch the man in his own words.
