Une voix qui ensorcelle et hypnotise entre Balkans et jazz



Chanteuse née àTirana (Albanie), émigrée en Suisse à 10 ans, Elina Duni fit des études de piano, de composition et de chant. Son jazz, inspiré de chansons traditionnelles albanaises, grecques,
roumaines ou bulgares - est l'une des belles découvertes de la nouvelle scène européenne, s'inscrivant dans la catégorie de chanteuses qui incarne une certaine idée de la mondialisation, comme
Susheela Raman, Yael Naim ou Hindi Zahra. Sauf qu'Elina, elle, est profondément ancrée dans une démarche jazz, avec une voix-instrument laissant libre cours à ses envolées et échappant ainsi au
gazouillis glamour formaté à la mode d'aujourd'hui. On parle de « volupté dans les amples vocalises au long cours, véhémentes, puissantes, mais flirtant avec l 'évanescence, jouant du souffle
brut, du chuchotement, du soupir » (Telerama). Une voix qui hypnotise, ensorcelle, et soutenue par des musiciens de jazz ancrés dans leur temps, et faisant déboucher la musique sur de nouvelles
manières de marier les différentes influences.

This 4hero release definitely has more soul and jazz than any previous ones but they haven't abandoned their jungle, drum & bass and break beat roots entirely. The result is an album that
goes in many different directions, covers a lot of ground but still manages to sound cohesive and consistent. I believe this is the best 4hero release yet.



Vocally there's a lot on offer too - straight ahead singing, spoken word, rap - and again, it all fits together very nicely. I hear influences from the 80s, hints of Roy Ayers and I was even
reminded of M.F.S.B.



Highlights include: The thumping, orchestral opener, "Morning Child", featuring Carina Andersson; "Look Inside", featuring FACE; the slow, sweeping, soulful "Give In", featuring vocals by Darien
Brockington and rap & additional vocals by Phonte of Little Brother (Again?! That's the third time in less than two weeks!! I definitely have to get my Little Brother CDs soon!); the jazzy
samba-esque title track (written old-time Donald Byrd/Alphonse Mouzon collaborator, Larry Mizell), featuring "original" vocals by Talita Long & Larry Mizell with "additional" vocals by Dego
& Kaidi Tatham (this is the song that reminds me of Roy Ayers); "The Awakening", with spoken word written and performed by Ursula Rucker; the gorgeous instrumental "Sophia" (this is the song
that reminds me of M.F.S.B.); the jazzy instrumental "Why Don't You Talk?", featuring a scorching saxophone solo by Jason Yarde; the bouncy "Bed Of Roses", featuring former Shalamar girl Jody
Watley; and the much too short closer, "Dedication To The Horse", with its wailing guitar work by Dave Okumu.



The controversial Stevie Wonder cover, "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You?)" is okay (I like the second half of the song a lot more than the first) but nothing special. Vocally and
instrumentally, the song seems to travel the exact same path as the original, note for note. I've always believed that if you're brave enough to want to do a Stevie song on your album, you'd
better be ready to do something new and exciting with it otherwise your efforts will end up sounding like a pale imitation. I say it again: it's a good attempt, it shows what a good singer Terry
Devos is and if you don't have the original version, you might love it. Personally, I just don't feel it adds anything to the album and it could've stood tall and proud quite easily without
it.



Overall, I think this album will appeal to broadminded jazz and soul lovers alike and if you like people like Incognito or Zero 7 (or Agent K, Silhouette Brown or Bruno E, I'm reliably informed),
then you'll really get into this. Totally satisfying and highly recommended.

"Ob Paris oder Berlin ..." - für Kitty Hoff macht das längst keinen Unterschied mehr. Mit ihrer eleganten Begleitband "Forêt-Noire" bildet sie gewissermaßen die musikalische Brücke zwischen
beiden Städten. Denn französischer als sie kann man als Deutsche/r wohl kaum klingen. "Was wären die Deutschen ohne ihre schlechte Laune?", fragt sie und antwortet lachend: "Franzosen!"



Mit "Zuhause", dem dritten Album dieses unendlich sympathischen Ensembles wird die schlechte Laune also ein weiteres Mal abgestreift und mit weichem Pinselstrich ein musikalisches Aquarell
entworfen, das ebenso leicht, originell und charmant gezeichnet ist wie seine Vorgänger. Die Farben: Leiser Bar-Jazz, Bossanova, Swing - bei Kitty Hoff "zuhause" setzt man auf traditionsreiche
Sounds, auf denen die Musiker ihre "seidigen" (Pressetext) Arrangements aufbauen, entspannt und glänzend aufgelegt.



Doch auch Dramatisches gelingt der Band: "Unterwelten" etwa ist ein Schlüsselstück, in dem Kitty Hoff und Forêt-Noire nahezu die komplette Bandbreite ihres Werks ausschöpfen; vom reduzierten, nur
von Percussions begleiteten Chanson bis zum donnernden Song-Finale mit Pauken und Trompeten. In "Pension Fuchs" darf das Ensemble sich dann instrumental austoben und zeigt, dass es sich auch im
Gewirr von Reggae, Dub und Kirmes-Polka mühelos zurechtfindet. In den übrigen Stücken brilliert Kitty Hoff einmal mehr mit kokett-witzigen Texten, manchmal auch herrlich politisch-unkorrekt
("Mahagoni, Holzwege ins Glück ..."), intelligent gereimt und mit pointierter Lautmalerei - die ästhetische Verbindung zwischen Wortklang und Musik gelingt derzeit niemandem so überzeugend wie
ihr.



Als Höhepunkt des Albums dürfte jedoch ein besonderer Coup gelten: "Riesenräder" ist eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem jungen französischen Chanson-Star Coralie Clément (im Stil ihres ersten Albums
"Salle des pas perdus") - so gesehen die personalisierte Brücke "Paris-Berlin". Was jedoch als "deutsch-französisches Duett" angekündigt wurde, entpuppt sich überraschend als très allemand (bloß
ohne schlechte Laune), denn Coralie Clément singt erstmals Deutsch, so süß und charmant wie zuletzt Ende der 60er Jahre Françoise Hardy ("Frag den Abendwind"). Und so versteht man: Wenn Deutsche
ohne schlechte Laune Franzosen wären, dann wären umgekehrt Franzosen ohne französische Sprache: Kitty Hoff!

Travis Barker, c'est un nom bien connu des amateurs de Pop Punk, on peut même parler de légende du genre. Il s'agit, en effet, du batteur des Blink 182. Et ce gars, pour son premier essai en
solo, devinez quoi, eh ben il a décidé de faire un album de Hip Hop! Sans être si surprenant que cela (Barker a déjà bossé pour Wale, The Game, Flo Rida, Paul Wall...), ce concept est tout de
même déconcertant, sur le papier. De fait, "Give The Drummer Some" entre dans la catégorie des crossover entre Rock et Rap et il s'en sort plutôt pas mal du tout.



Il faut dire que cet album bénéficie d'un casting hollywoodien. On y retrouve Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Pharrell Williams, Lupe Fiasco, les Cool Kids, Slaughterhouse, Kid Cudi et des tas d'autres
superstars du Rap. Le gratin du genre semble très enthousiaste à l'idée d'apparaitre sur ce disque aux vues des prestations déchainées de chacun. On retiendra "Can A Drummer Get Some" (ou chaque
couplet pèse quelques millions de dollars vu la pointure des participants), "Beat Goes On" avec des Cypress Hill très à l'aise (comme sur leur "Rise Up" avec Tom Morello des Rage Against The
Machine) ou encore "If You Want To" où Pharrell et Lupe Fiasco délivrent un morceau très "NERDien".



Il y a quelque chose de jouissif dans cet album. Le coté remuant et échevelé de l'instrumentalisation Rock donne une énergie et un charme tout particulier à celui-ci. Tout le monde semble très
content de participer à cette gigantesque fête donnée par Travis Barker qui réussit là une sacrée démonstration de force, mine de rien. Pour un batteur de Rock, l'ex-Blink 182 démontre une grande
connaissance du Hip Hop game, que ce soit dans son approche musicale (plusieurs sous-genres de Rap sont abordés) ou dans celle de ses invités (un large éventail de sensibilités évoquées là
encore, de Lil Jon à Slaughterhouse en passant par Beanie Sigel et Ludacris).



Après les Black Keys et leur remarquable Blakroc, Travis Barker prouve une fois de plus qu'on peut mélanger Rock et Hip Hop de façon intelligente. "Give The Drummer Some" est une des bonnes
surprises de ce début d'année.

Du haut de ses 70 ans, Billy Hart est un marathonien du jazz. L’avènement des années 60 signe sa naissance à la musique. Derrière ses fûts, il épaule les plus grands, de Miles Davis à Lee Konitz,
en passant par Stan Getz, McCoy Tyner ou Pharoah Sanders. Ainsi fait-il passer ses talents d’artilleur à l’épreuve de tous les styles du jazz contemporain : cool, be-bop, free, fusion, ou même
bossa. En 2011 néanmoins, personne n’aurait parié retrouver notre baroudeur de percussionniste au sein du Tied & Tickled Trio, au côté des Allemands Marcus et Michael Acher, les deux têtes
pensantes de The Notwist.



Depuis maintenant une dizaine d'années, les frères Acher donnent le la à tout un collectif de musiciens et artistes regroupés sous le nom de scène de Weilheim. The Notwist, par sa notoriété, est
évidement son cœur battant. La musique qu'on entend dans cette ville de Bavière va pourtant bien au-delà du simple croisement entre pop et electronica. D'ailleurs c’est souvent quand ils
délaissent l’electro-pop douce-amer de The Notwist que nos deux frangins nous surprennent le plus. Citons 13 & God par exemple, leur collaboration avec le groupe de hip-hop Themselves...et
avec plus d’enthousiasme encore ce fameux Tied & Tickled Trio.



D’assez loin, on peut dire que Tied & Tickled Trio est l’entité la plus polymorphe de la scène de Weilheim. C'est un groupe qui n'a jamais manqué de nous surprendre. Un album comme Observing
Systems par exemple est solidement encré dans le jazz contemporain, tandis que EA1EA2 le fait se confronter à une electronica super ciselée. Plus récemment encore, l'étonnant Aelita se frayait un
chemin entre un dub suranné et un jazz lunaire dans une ambiance de vieux films soviétiques de science-fiction. Saisissant en tout point ! Pour La Place Démon, la surprise de taille est donc la
présence du mastodonte Billy Hart derrière la batterie.



S'il possède toutes les couleurs du jazz, La Place Démon est avant tout un album où les références les plus variées se croisent, se confrontent ou s'embrassent. Contrairement à Aelita, le trio
affectionne ici les compositions à tiroir, les changements de registres, les décalages les plus subtils. Dans un même morceau, on trouve des thèmes dignes de musiques de film, des structures
anguleuses propres aux musiques électroniques, ou des moments de jazz toujours très référencés. Dans d'autres morceaux, on trouve aussi tout ça en même temps, dans une même embardée.



De cette manière, les titres de La Place Démon oscillent sans cesse entre évolutions subtiles, revers soudains, traditions et avant-gardes. On pourrait voir d'ailleurs comme une filiation entre
La Place Démon et On This Night, l'un des albums les plus aventureux d'Archie Shepp. Les tintements d'un vibraphone ou certains motifs ébauchés par le saxophone ténor de Johannes Enders nous y
font penser. Notamment quand ceux-ci esquissent l'atmosphère d’un film noir ; quand ils nous plongent au cœur de quartiers inquiétants, battus par une nuit pluvieuse.



Chacun leur tour ou tous à l'unisson, Billy Hart et ses comparses allemands explorent les limites d'un jazz cinématique sans cesse en ébullition. Les trois sections de The Three Doors illustrent
parfaitement le dynamisme de la collaboration entre le batteur américain et Tied & Tickled Trio. Répartis tout au long du disque, chacune d'elle offre une facette différente de leur
association en puisant dans un très large panel de structures et d’influences.

Sur un rythme soutenu The three Doors Part 3 ébauche un swing synthétique et sans doute improvisé où basse et percussions, synthétiseurs et cuivres avancent en rang serré, ne s’embarrassant
d’aucun détour inutile. C’est une pièce très progressiste quand, de son côté, The Three Doors Part 2 est un moment de jazz hors du temps qui sonne presque anachronique au milieu des desseins plus
contemporains des autres compositions.



Enfin The Three Doors Part 1 est le morceau le plus explosif du disque. Billy Hart en est l'attentif maître d'œuvre tout autant que l’artificier. Au côté du contrebassiste, il impose une cadence
de plus en plus soutenue, trace un sillon le long duquel les zéphyrs électroniques d'Andreas Gerth et toutes sortes de cuivres et d'instruments à vent dessinent des motifs alambiqués et
dramatiques. Un violon frondeur se frotte à l'ensemble pour provoquer enfin un sursaut frénétique qui viendra d'un solo de sax bien senti en tout point par Johannes Enders.



Ailleurs sur le disque, des titres comme Calaca ou Violent Collaborations Part 1 proposent des solutions musicales toutes aussi convaincantes et efficaces. Mais on trouvera vraiment à se régaler
sur l’iconoclaste Lonely Woman/Exit La Place Démon/The Electronic Family. C’est une longue pièce qui s’ouvre sans cesse des lignes de fuite vers autre chose que ce jazz cinématique qui est la
substantifique moelle du disque tout en arrivant à conserver la même tension inhérente au genre.



Au final La Place Démon s'impose comme un album passionnant et bouillonnant qui maintient sans cesse l'attention de l'auditeur en alerte. Billy Hart, qui ne s'est pas limité à relever de ses
frappes fantastiques les compositions des Allemands, a aussi mis la main à la patte et ça se ressent. Jamais la musique du Trio n'aura paru plus sûre d'elle et plus ouverte.

Harrison Stafford, leader charismatique du célèbre groupe californien Groundation, se lance dans un projet solo plutôt convaincant sous le nom de Professor. Projet solo certes, mais le chanteur
enturbané a su se constituer une parfaite dream-team jamaïcaine pour l’accompagner : Leroy « Horsemouth » Wallace à la batterie, Errol « Flabba » Holt à la basse, Lloyd « Obeah » Denton au
clavier et Dalton Brownie à la guitare. Un album écrit et composé par Harrison suite à un séjour en Cisjordanie où il aurait rencontré un poète palestinien connaisseur de reggae mais critique
vis-à-vis de cette musique qu’il considère comme « pro-israélienne ». L’idée germe alors dans la tête de l’américain : pourquoi ne pas enregistrer un album reggae en se plaçant du point de vue
palestinien ? Le résultat est surprenant. Bien que la voix de Stafford rappelle irrémédiablement Groundation, les mélodies, les arrangements et les constructions musicales sont dans la pure
tradition jamaïcaine. D’ailleurs l’album a été enregistré au studio Harry J et entièrement mixé à Kingston ; une première pour le chanteur américain. Les textes sont inspirés des visites et des
rencontres palestiniennes de Professor (surnom que les jamaïcains ont l’habitude de donner à Harrison Stafford) ; une sorte de déclaration d’amour à cette région du monde et à leurs habitants qui
souffrent chaque jour du conflit israélo-palestinien depuis des années. U-Roy et Winston McAnuff viennent apporter leur vibes sur deux morceaux particulièrement réussis (« Madness » et « Right On
»). Le seul bémol à cet opus réside dans la durée de l’album : seulement 8 morceaux (accompagnés de leurs dubs respectifs), que l'on voudrait parfois plus longs! Les amateurs du concept seront
ravis, quand d’autres resteront peut-être sur leur faim. Quoiqu’il en soit, un nouvel artiste débarque sur la scène reggae internationale et l’on ne peut que soutenir la démarche de Professor qui
signe ici une superbe réussite musicale et un beau coup de projecteur sur un problème rarement abordé par les artistes reggae. On attend avec beaucoup de curiosité une éventuelle tournée en
France qui serait un évènement à ne pas manquer, soyons-en sûrs...
