absolument pop.

This album gives a rather consistent listen and is an introduction with some examples of the influences of psych and funk into Indian popular music mostly, or in combination in Indian music, most
often this is with a Bollywood music relationship. They have compiled it well although I would have preferred not to have the already over-exposed sitar beat rock track from the German Klaus
Doldinger here. They have also based themselves on other compilations and include a few tracks from these sources, just like on the previously reissued compilations from the label, which for a
part sounds a bit lazy, but because of its fit well together character more easily forgiveable. Essential were of course the Simla Beat tracks, which were already to be found on the Normal
records compilation (from which the Black Beats was very good indeed and the X'Lents instrumental is an essential piece of Indian psychedelia). A whole lecture on their psych-funk theme is
included, although this is just a fragment of their own interests and it is not something of a real historical overview or something overly important for the Indian music itself which had even a
lot more to cover. After the two Simla Beat tracks are a few interesting psych-beat and psych-funk contributions by Kayandji Anandji. R.D.Burmann received already some attention and compilations
in music lover circles. There are a few important crossover mixes added. A nice find is Bappi Lahari's “Everybody dance with me”, an erotic dance pop song with the bass line of IB's
“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”. Like the compilers say, the Usha Kanna's edited track is a good example of psych-funk, but also a bit short as an idea. Sapan Jagmohan's track sounds equally interesting. A
last psych track is from Atomic Forest from the Obsession LP which I sadly missed, here with a very American heavy psych sound with a cover of a Deep Purple track. Outstandingly different is
Hemant Bhosle (with Asha) with an interesting crossover of 60s psych with cosmo organ mixed with a more recent disco beat. The fact that you can find the front covers of the original albums makes
this compilation also more interesting for your collection. The booklet is more like complete book.

Review
Resonating with lush instrumentation and the sacred, lyrical richness of Persian poetry, this album represents a very important milestone in contemporary Iranian history. On May 22nd, 2007 the
Italian and Norwegian embassies helped Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat plan a musical performance in Tehran, where women are banned from singing solo in public. Taking the stage without veils, the
sisters stood together before that audience, bravely wielding the weapon of music against the continued oppression of women. The duo is now performing internationally and continuing to campaign
against censorship. Maria Jett --World Pulse Magazine
Product Description
On May 22, 2007 a remarkable concert was held in a Persian garden in Tehran. With the help of both the Italian and Norwegian Embassies, two Iranian sisters, Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat performed
without veils and bravely chose to use their music as a weapon against the oppression of women in their country. This concert was recorded and released by Norwegian label, Kirkelig Kulturverksted
(KKV), late last year. Songs From a Persian Garden was produced by Erik Hillestad who also put together the critically acclaimed Lullabies From The Axis of Evil.
...If we want to understand what treasures we may find in the fantastic country of Iran, we should listen to the magic and the power given to its music and poetry. The fact that women in this
huge country of 70 million people will never stop singing wherever they can and because of the intolerant doctrines and laws, Iranian officials contribute to making their singing one of the most
powerful weapons to fight all kinds of reduction of the human rights in their country. --Erik Hillestad
The US version of Songs From A Persian Garden will also include a duet with Mahsa and Melissa Etheridge on Bob Dylan s I Shall Be Released .
Mahsa and Marjan were introduced to the American public on Lullabies... with Sad Sol , a duet with English diva, Sarah Jane Morris and a traditional Iranian Lullaby, Lalala Gohle Laleh .

Recent Black Grass single Don't Leave Me This Way - a reworking of the song which has previously been a hit for The Communards and Thelma Houston - was something of a nothing, but luckily his new
album is all together better.
A Hundred Days In One more than makes up for the disappointment of the mediocre single, from the opening Latino-style drum beats of Lucha Contra De La Injustica all the way through to the smooth
and steady Nobody Knows (It's Sunday). In fact, in the middle of this box of delights, even Don't Leave Me This Way starts to sound good, with Dominique Noiret's sultry vocals adding the perfect
air of dark mystery to this slowed down, lugubrious take.
Using Hip Hop as his foundations and framework, Black Grass (aka Mex) fills in the gaps with funk, jazz, soul and reggae, helped out by a host of collaborators, including American and home-bred
Hip Hop stars such as Maylay Sparks and Micall Parknsun, MC Blu Rum 13 as well as Jah Marnyah and Rider Shafique from the world of reggae.
The result is smooth, relaxing and laid-back, dipping in and out of the musical styles which comprise it from track to track. Nemesis in particular is a highlight, offering a darker, bassier,
trancier downtime after the more energetic Lines of Defence which precedes it, the latter complete with military beats, as its title might suggest.
So Many Ways also deserves an honourable mention, helped along by Okou's impressive vocal range, while the back-to-back patter of Blu Rum 13 and Maylay Sparks on Rest Assured and Don't Try
respectively also works well.
If fact, what makes the album so much better than the single alone is its structure. All that was wrong with Don't Leave Me This Way was that it had been taken out of its carefully crafted
context and, on its own, sounded too slow and forgettable; here, it's a part of a greater whole which speeds up the beats for a couple of tracks then slows them down for the next, offering
lyrically dense Hip Hop next to extended instrumentals that give you time to watch the girl, plan your approach, offer her a drink and a dance and then sidle back to the comfy couches for a quick
snog before the evening's out.
Mex took to the decks recently at The Big Chill, and this is an album that seems tailor made for a festival with that name. He's next on show at Bestival and amid the sequins and feather boas he
could just provide the honey-tinged smooth respite needed at the end of a weekend when the relentless cheeriness of The Scissor Sisters threatens to become just a little bit too much.
