quand la bande orchestre...

C'est l'histoire d'un film qui n'avait pas de son et d'un groupe qui se cherchait une image. La rencontre entre The Cinematic Orchestra ( une musique accrochée à l'âme d'un autre art - le cinéma)
et man with a movie camera de Dziga Vertov ( documentaire de 1929 au montage audacieux pour l'époque et à la prosodie innovante) se devait d'avoir lieu lors d'un happening au Portugal, forcément
inédit et forcément original. Cette performance se devait de pousser le groupe sur le terrain d'un disque (everyday, sorti en 2002) et d'un autre aujourd'hui. Ainsi on découvre les esquisses de
Everyday en deuxième lecture. Le DVD, man with a movie camera qui sort sur Ninjatune met davantage en avant la musique des chouchous du label que le cinéma assez "conceptuel" de Vertov. Jouant à
fond sur la mythologie du cinéma muet Work it, Voyage , Odyssey et même si l'expérience n'est pas neuve mais on ne se lasse pas de Jason Swinscoe et de son indéniable génie à mettre en scène et
en sons de grande émotions Dawn. Il y a presque dix ans, Aphex Twin, en sonorisant 'Nosferatu' de Murnau au Barbican Center a peut-être lancé le mouvement qui aujourd'hui voit toute une
génération s'approprier non plus les ambiances cinématographiques de leurs pairs mais littéralement coloniser les pellicules en 35mm et autres (cf. les séances de cinémixing qui abondent,
l'excellente collection cinémix' sortie chez Universal Jazz). A ce jeu-là The Cinematic Orchestra, de par la qualité de la production très organique ici, conforte sa place de chef de rang.

Le moins que l'on puisse dire , c'est que "Kiss my arp" a fait parler de lui lors de sa sortie. Sans doute les 12 plages qu'il contient en ont dérouté plus d'un et malheureusement, on sait que ce
qui est nouveau est toujours soumis à critique de la part du milieu journalistique, censé savoir de quoi il parle, de la musique indépendante.

"Breaking the code" ouvre le bal. Sons percutants, mélodie sombre, et le fameux chant éthéré de Andrea, termine de rendre cette ouverture absolument réussie. "In two minds" mélange sonorité grave
et bruits aigus, groove soutenu et symphonie de cordes. Downtempo et coups d'éclat des violons sur "Clutching at straws". La voix de Andrea s'y fait plus sensuelle que jamais. "Melodious thunk",
le tout pemier titre composé par miss Parker, est un instrumental long et rythmé, aux teintes légèrement pop et old-school. Electro complexe, violon triste, break-beat et chant planant durant
"Some other level", puis mix parfait entre trip-hop, ambient, instruments à cordes et voix évanescente pendant le très beau "The unknown". Sans aucun doute le moment fort de "Kiss my arp".
"Elements of style" se veux être un défouloir mutant de percussions digitales, comme une salsa robotique et artificielle. Rythme tribal et lourd avec le noir "Going nowhere". Atmosphère fermée et
étrange. "Sneeze" est une instrumentale, torturée et vibrante, déjantée et parcourue de soubresauts métalliques. "Lost luggage" donne libre cours aux violoncelles et violons, dans une
étourdissante envolée triste et désespérée. Empirique, le titre prend toute son ampleur lors de l'apparition d'un groove lent et mécanique, s'opposant naturellement à l'harmonie classique et au
chant profond et à deux voix de Andrea. Symphonie toujours sur "Return of the rocking chair". L'electro est largement en retrait cette fois-ci. On pense à une instru de PORTISHEAD, le downtempo
sous prozac en moins. Enfin, "Exclamation mark !" referme ce premier album. Courte instrumentale, mystérieuse et étouffée.



Certes, "Kiss my arp" manque encore un peu de perfection. Mais honnêtement, rien dans cette production ne mérite d'être mis à la poubelle. Elle contient des morceaux sublimes, que seuls les
musiciens de talent savent inventer. Au carrefour des styles et des genres se trouve la demoiselle dont je vous parle. A vous de voir.

Dj Shadow est le roi du mix et du remix depuis bien longtemps à tel point qu’il compte à son actif plus de disques de ce genre que de véritables albums studio. S’il reste l’auteur d’un des albums majeurs de ces 20 dernières années, ("Endtroducing)" on ne peut pas dire que la suite ait été bien passionnante. Là encore il revient avec un exercice de recyclage où il laisse des internautes remixer des vieux titres de son répertoire. C’est très sympa mais ça n’apporte rien de plus par rapport à tout ce qu’il a pu entendre par le passé.

Forever Version is the debut album from Jamaican reggae deejay Dennis Alcapone. It was released in 1971 by Studio One, and features Alcapone toasting over some of the label's greatest

I’m relieved that, as bad as things seem to be, people are still making desert island discs in America. By desert island discs, I don’t mean Signals, Calls and Marches. As writer Jeff Koyen noted
back in the ‘90s: what the fuck would one need punk rock for on a desert island? Good, angry rock is the sound of mainland claustrophobia. Under our sad circumstances, it makes for an easy
emotional attachment. But it’s all context. If you’re on a desert island and you’ve got an adequate food supply, you may as well relax and recall certain aspects of the mainland fondly, if at
all.



Somebody makes perfect music for that, and that good soul employs the handle Nobody. The first record was good. This one’s better. It’s got a more refined musical palate and a more defined sense
of humor.



Within the first 10 minutes, you’ve already got a blasé cover of the Flaming Lips’ “What Is The Light?” In Elvin Estela’s hands, W. Coyne’s prog-rock Bic flicker becomes a rickety mix-‘n’-match
that rattles toward its conclusion seemingly by coincidence. The beat drops hard, and his sometime-colleagues in Beechwood Sparks and the Aislers Set pop in to help out.



“Wake Up and Smell The Millennium” takes a tack even less conceptually aggressive, running Curt Boettcher’s music over an unassuming beat and pretty much leaving it be. It works because Estrella
is smart, smart enough to know when he needn’t flash his skills. He reminds us by counterexample why so many “turntablist” records are so unlistenable.



The balance runs the gamut, from the delightfully askew “Poor Angular Fellow” to the Spanish toast “Con Um Relampago” to the stomping “Go Go Interlude Go” to the wistfully Nico’d “You Can Know
Her” (which features the understated vocals of forever up-and-coming balladeer Mia Dia Todd).



“Beat science” has been so thoroughly integrated into every corner of popular music, one barely notices it here. The rhythms that anchor And Everything Else are no more auspicious than gravity.
For the most part, it sounds like giddy, faux-innocent psychedelia filtered through a kaleidoscope, moody but never mopey.



I’ll bring this to the island. You bring Everything Went Black. We’ll see who leaves with fewer unnecessary ulcers.

I’m maybe a wee bit late in highlighting this EP, as it was in fact released in February (before this blog even existed), but it’s one of my favourite listens of the year so it’s better late than
never. Kneel And You Will Lose is the second EP by Zefs Chasing Cara, a solo project that is inventive and complex in its inception, but a quite accessible piece of work.



The mainstay of the music is extremely tech guitar playing, but the complexity is not allowed to overtake the songs and instead fuels and caters for the progressive, rousing pieces. The make-up
of the tracks could be compared to house music, with the layering of sounds, building of momentum, and the general crescendo that is reached, and the structure allows for music that would
soundtrack many a great cinematic moment.



There Are two Timelines And In One I Would Regret Not Doing This and Hurtsz Kerb introduce the guitar stylings, some synth sounds and the dance dynamics, before the lo-fi mellow Bru Hit Him
splits the EP well and sets up an ending which blew me away.



It rises and drops several times, with the vocals having a calming effect in the middle, until it can’t be held back any more and the dam breaks allowing the wave of frenetic guitar to burst
through. It is really inspiring stuff and has such an impetus about it.



The final track Cracker Deelosay starts off with similar guitar stylings and more prominent vocals than previous tracks that are slightly unclear but have a definite rallying presence to them.
The song then bursts into what feels like a remix, with synth sounds and voice box taking over proceedings, giving it an almost house music feel. The step up tops off what feels like a massive
forward movement from the start of the EP.



This EP and its predecessor, I’m Gowing, are both available for free download.

Tout d'abord le nom « audioclockers » vient directement du film de Spike Lee lui-même inspiré du roman d’un enfant du Bronx, Richard Price. Les "clockers" sont ces petits dealers de rue qui vendent le crack, ce démon du ghetto, au coin des "project", véritables cités dortoirs à la manière américaine dans une ambiance de survie quotidienne. Nos « Audioclockers » en ont donc détourné le sens pour se définir comme des petits dealers de son, des vendeurs au détail qui marchandent leur son brut pour nous aider à survivre un peu plus dans la fournaise qui nous entoure.

L’album nous traîne ainsi vers toutes les stations de l' « Underground Railroad » de la musique : le jazz, la soul, le reggae, le rock, la drum and bass et l'electro, cette expérimentation sonore tout azimut permise par les machines actuelles. Le carburant de cette locomotive est une énergie principalement hip-hop, culture toujours refondatrice par excellence. En témoigne le premier partenaire de « Dtracks » sur ce projet : « DJ Blat X ». C'est une première démarche salvatrice que de replacer au coeur d'un disque de rap le DJ et son art, le scratch, cette pratique musicale inventé par le hip-hop.
Les scratch de « DJ Blat X » sont comme des coups de rasoir dans le temps qui impulsent des danses crépitantes sur les mélodies diluviennes de « Dtracks » et donnent aux passages instrumentaux cette intensité pulsionnelle si jouissive.
Au micro, les lames qui s'entremêlent tranchent nettement avec le tout venant du rap routinier des ondes FM. Une partie de l'équipe de K2C assure la déclinaison francophone du projet avec la diatribe éloquente de « La main gauche » contre la France ségrégationniste  ou l'algèbre rapologique de « Demba » brisant d'un froissement de micro sans équivoque les faux semblant des mythes commerciaux du bien mal nommé "rap de rue".
Ce projet regorge aussi de perles glanés outre atlantique en marge des poncifs du moment. Il n'y a qu'à se laisser porter par « Perseph'one » et ses hauteurs d'élocution pour s'en convaincre.
De son grain intime la voix du rappeur « Specsone » nous dessine, au milieu des craquements de matrice agencés par « Dtracks », la convaincante esquisse d'un maillage presque cosmique. Ce maillage qui ne germe qu'entre des musiciens libres.

Nous pourrions creuser plus loin encore ces univers que nous dévoile ces « Audioclockers » tout au long des leurs rencontres : « Les Turtle Handz », « Babel Fishh », « Silas and the silent blak project », « Aamir of escape artist » (certains noms ne doivent rien au hasard), « Notabene » (guitare), La voix soul de "Lo", la flûte hypnotique d'un « Ji-mob » et autre « Artoo ».
Pour autant, nous ne ferions que couvrir de mots ce que des oreilles attentives comprendront d'elles-mêmes car cet album, voulu ainsi par « Dtracks », est celui des rencontres et des liaisons souterraines.
